Installation Of Altronic III Ignition Conversion Groups{1550, 1552, 1567} Caterpillar

Installation Of Altronic III Ignition Conversion Groups{1550, 1552, 1567}

Usage:

3304 (37Y1) 4W3282, 3306 (07Y1) 4W3283, G342 (71B147) 4W3281, G379 (72B359) 4W3280, G398 (73B665) 4W3284, G399 (49C924) 4W3279

Typical Altronic III Ignition System (Dual Magneto Drive on G399 Engine)

The Altronic III solid state magnetos are replacements for the Fairbanks Morse solid state and mechanical magnetos.

Removal Of Existing Spark Ignition System

(1) Remove all wiring harness clips. Disconnect the common ground wire. Disconnect the wires at each transformer. Disconnect all of the wires from the magneto cap terminal screws. Remove the wiring harness.

(2) Remove all transformers and mounting brackets.

(3) Remove the magneto and gasket.

Installation Of The Altronic III Solid State Magneto

(1) Remove the cover for the flywheel timing pointer.

(2) Using a turning tool, turn the flywheel in the direction of normal engine rotation until No. 1 piston comes up on compression stroke. For more detailed instructions, see the service manual topic, "FINDING TOP CENTER COMPRESSION POSITION FOR NO. 1 PISTON".

(3) Turn the flywheel until the correct timing mark is under the flywheel housing pointer. See the chart, "NO. 1 CYLINDER TIMING ANGLES FOR ALTRONIC III MAGNETOS".

(4) Align the "CCW" mark on the magneto rear cover plate with the mark on the shaft by turning the drive lug tangs; the driving lugs will be vertical. Install a gasket on the magneto flange.

(5) If the grooves in the coupling drive do not align with the magneto lugs, pull the coupling out, rotate and align it, and put it back into place.

No. 1 Cylinder Timing Angles For Altronic III Magnetos

(6) Insert the magneto, engage the magneto tangs with the drive coupling while keeping the marks on the shaft and magneto aligned. Install the mounting bolts, but do not tighten.

For G399 Engines, rotate the magneto 90 degrees clockwise before inserting each magneto. The upper magneto powers the right bank: Cylinders 1-3-5-7-9-11-13-15. The lower magneto powers the left bank: Cylinders 2-4-6-8-10-12-14-16.

After installing the upper magneto, rotate the flywheel to compression stroke for No. 2 cylinder. While holding the second magneto vertical with the "CCW" marks pointing to 11 o"clock, rotate the shaft until the shaft mark points to 1 o'clock (approximately 70 degrees from the "CCW" mark).

Install a gasket on the magneto flange, rotate the magneto 90 degrees clockwise, and install the magneto without moving the shaft. Do not tighten the mounting bolts until after the engine is timed.

Installing The Wiring Group

(1) Remove the existing instrument panel. Install the 8L5850 Instrument Panel. Make all wire connections with the panel.

(2) Install the new transformers using the new brackets and existing mounting holes.

(3) Install the new wiring harness. Run the wires according to the related wiring diagram and the following instructions:

3304-3306 GAS ENGINES: Attach the conduit to the inlet manifold between cylinders 3 and 4 using two (2) clips. Connect the common ground to the engine block.

G342 ENGINES: Attach the conduit to the engine block using three (3) 1S9066 Clips. Route the wire bundle to the rear of transformers 2-3-4 and 5. Secure the bundle with four (4) 1H5165 Clips. Connect the common ground to the engine block.

G379 and G398 ENGINES: Connect the common ground to the No. 2 cylinder transformer mounting bolt. Route the wire bundles under the right and left inlet manifolds, and clip them to the intake ports 3-5-7 and 2-4-6 for the G379; and to the intake ports 3-5-7-9-11 and 2-4-6-8-10 for the G398.

G399 ENGINES: Connect the ground wire for the upper magneto to the mounting bracket for No. 1 cylinder. Connect the common ground for the lower magneto to the mounting bracket for No. 8 cylinder. Route the wire bundles under the right and left inlet manifolds. Clip the bundles to intake ports 3 through 15.

NOTE: Primary leads from the wire bundles are to be routed over the bent portion of each transformer mounting bracket, but must not contact the bracket.

(4) Plug the connector into the rear of the magneto.

Timing The Engine

(1) Connect a timing light to the No. 1 cylinder spark plug for all engines.

For the G399 SAE standard rotation engine, time the right bank to No. 1 cylinder, the left bank to No. 2 cylinder.

For SAE opposite rotation, time the right bank to No. 1 cylinder, the left bank to No. 12 cylinder.

(2) Start and warm the engine. Increase engine speed to full load rpm.

(3) Using a timing light, slowly rotate the magneto until the timing marks are aligned.

(4) Tighten the magneto mounting bolts.

(5) Remove the timing light and connect the spark plug lead wire.

(6) Install the flywheel housing timing cover.
