The Twin Disc IBF Series rear power takeoff clutches used on the above engines have oil lubrication to the clutch main bearings. To increase the service life of the clutch main bearings, a conversion can be made to use grease for lubrication to these bearings. The lip type seals must be removed and new labyrinth type grease seals must be installed. The labyrinth type seals must be fabricated. This instruction gives the dimensions to make the new seals and also gives the procedure to make the conversion.
(1) For engines equipped with 3N6545, 3N8613 or 3N8614 Clutch Assemblies, make two labyrinth-type seals (1) from any good quality steel to the dimensions shown. For engines equipped with 7L7490, 7L7759 or 3N8615 Clutch Assemblies, make two labyrinth-type seals (2) from any good quality steel to the dimension shown.
(2) Remove flywheel clutch assembly (3) from the engine. Remove the drive hub or pulley from clutch shaft (4). Completely disassemble the clutch assembly to remove shaft (4). Remove oil seal wear sleeves (5) from shaft (4). See the Service Manual for the correct disassembly and assembly procedures.
(3) Remove seals (6) from carrier assembly (7) and retainer (8). Install labyrinth seals (1) or (2) in carrier (7) and retainer (8). The smaller diameter on the outside diameter of the seals should be put in the bore first; this will make installation easier. Remove nipple (9) and the cap from carrier (7). Install an 8K5910 Grease Fitting where nipple (9) was removed.
(4) Remove dipstick (10) and tube (11) from carrier (7). After tube (11) is removed use a 1/8"-27 pipe tap to make threads in the hole where the tube is removed. Install a 6B7440 Pipe Plug (1/8"-27) in the hole. Thoroughly clean the carrier.
(5) Install cup (12) in carrier (7). Install cone assemblies (13) on shaft (4). Put 5P960 Grease in bearings (13), by hand; be sure to completely fill the bearings. Install shaft (4) in carrier (7). Fill compartment (A) with grease. Install cup (14) and fill compartment (B) with grease. Install retainer (8) and seal (15). Assemble the remainder of the clutch assembly as shown in the Service Manual. Install a new bearing (16). Install the clutch group on the engine. Start the engine and let it run at low idle, no load; put grease through the grease fitting until grease can be seen between the labyrinth seals and the clutch shaft. See the Lubrication Guide for the correct service procedure for the clutch main bearings.
