The installation of Sound Isolation Mounting Groups causes a reduction in movement of noise and vibration from the engine and marine gear to the structure of the vessel. Similar isolation materials should be installed on all components of the drive line. NOTICE

Thickness of the isolation washers will gradually become smaller because of compression. After the mounting bolts are tightened to specified torque during installation, do not tighten them again unless alignment procedure is again necessary.

NOTE: Some earlier engines are equipped with shorter mounting rails and the thrust components cannot be installed unless modification is made to the engine rail. See modification procedure on page 11.

Installation With Poured Shims (Fluid That Becomes Solid)

Installation of sound isolators:

(1) With a 1.312"Ø (34Ø) drill, drill fitted holes (P) at location (D) in engine rails (1) only. With a reamer, make fitted holes (P) 1.375" + .000" - .001"Ø (35 + .000 - .025Ø).

(2) Make alignment of the marine transmission to the output shaft; use the procedure given in Form LEHM1469. A minimum clearance of 2.125" (54) at location (E) is necessary between engine rail (1) and engine bed (4) to install thrust component (3). CAUTION: Before item 3 is started, make sure there is enough clearance between the engine rail and engine bed to install bolts (B). If not, do item 8 before item 3.

(3) At locations (D), install a 5N4403 Drill Bushing. With a 1.062"Ø (27Ø) drill, and with the drill bushing used as a guide, drill mounting holes (K) in engine bed (4). At locations (D), remove the 5N4403 Drill Bushing and install a 5N4452 Ream Bushing. With a 1.125"Ø (29Ø) reamer, and with the ream bushing used as a guide, ream mounting holes (K) in engine bed (4) to 1.125"Ø ± .001"Ø (28.6 ± .025Ø).

(4) With a 1.062"Ø (27Ø) drill, and with the holes in the engine rails used as a guide, drill holes (N) at location (H) in engine bed (4).

(5) At location (D) install 1.12"Ø (28Ø) fitted bolts (G) with isolation bushings (7) and lower isolation washers (5). At location (H) install .88"Ø (22Ø) bolts (M) with O-ring (8) and lower isolation washers (10). Hold lower isolation washers (5) and (10) in position with a thin layer of rubber cement.

(6) Before installation of the poured shims, lift the complete unit .022" (0.56) higher. This is the amount of reduction in thickness of the isolation washers with the weight of the unit and the bolts tightened. CAUTION: Poured shims should not be used under thrust components. Do not install solid shims (6) under thrust components (3) until all of the weight of the unit is on isolation washers (5) and (10) and bolts (G) and (M) have been tightened. Make sure the poured shims do not make contact with the engine rails. Maximum temperature of the poured shims must not exceed 200°F (93°C)

(7) Loosen the transmission jacking screws (adjustment screws). Install upper isolation washers (5) and (10), steel washers (9) and nuts. At locations (D), tighten the nuts on bolts (G) to a torque of 80 ± 5 lb.ft. (109 ± 7 N·m). At locations (H) tighten the nuts on bolts (M) to a torque of 70 ± 5 lb.ft. (96 ± 7 N·m).

Installation of thrust components

(8) Assemble each thrust component (3). Tighten bolts (A) to a torque of 30 ± 5 lb.ft. (40 ± 7 N·m). Fasten the thrust component to the engine rail with clamps. Make sure the mounting holes are a minimum of 1.50" (38) from the end of the rail as shown. Before the holes for bolts (B) are drilled through the engine rails, make sure holes (C) can be drilled throug the engine bed. With a .968"Ø (25Ø) drill, using the holes in the thrust component as a guide, drill holes for bolts (B) through the thrust component and engine rail only. With a reamer, make the holes 1.00" ± .001"Ø (25.4 ± .025Ø). Install bolts (J) at holes (C). Install solid shims (6) under thrust components (3) and tighten the nuts on bolts (J) to a torque of 640 ± 80 lb.ft. (865 ± 110 N·m).

(9) Again check the alignment at the companion flange. If alignment is correct, the installation procedure is complete. If the alignment is not correct, do the alignment procedure again.

Installation With Solid Shims

Installation of sound isolators:

(1) With a 1.312"Ø (34Ø) drill, drill fitted holes (P) at locations (D) in engine rails (1) only. With a reamer, make fitted holes (P) 1.375" + .000 - .001"Ø (35 + .000 - .025Ø).

(2) Make alignment of the marine transmission to the output shaft; use the procedure given in Form LEHM1469. A minimum clearance of 2.123" (54) at location (E) is necessary between engine rail (1) and engine bed (4) to install thrust component (3). CAUTION: Before item 3 is started, make sure there is enough clearance between the engine rail and engine bed to install bolts (B). If not, do item 8 before item 3.

(3) At locations (D), install a 5N4403 Drill Bushing. With a 1.062"Ø (27Ø) drill, and with the drill bushing as a guide, drill mounting holes (K) in engine bed (4). At locations (D), remove the 5N4403 Drill bushing and install a 5N4452 Ream Bushing. With a 1.125"Ø (29Ø) reamer, and with the ream bushing as a guide, ream mounting holes (K) in engine bed (4) to 1.125" ± .001"Ø (28.6 ± .025Ø).

(4) With a 1.062"Ø (27Ø) drill and with the holes in the engine rails used as a guide, drill holes (N) at location (H) in engine bed (4).

(5) Measure the spaces between engine rails (1) and engine beds (4) and make a record of dimensions (L). The thickness of an isolation washer is .235" ± 0.15" (6.0 ± 0.38). To get dimension (F), subtract .235" ± 0.15" (6.0 ± 0.38) from dimension (L) and add .022" (0.56); this will give the correct thickness of solid shims needed. .022" (0.56) is the amount of reduction in thickness of the isolation washers with the weight of the unit and the bolts tightened.

(6) Lift the complete unit and install solid shims (6). At locations (D) install 1.12"Ø (28Ø) fitted bolts (G) with isolation bushing (7) and lower isolation washers (5). At locations (H) install .88"Ø (22Ø) bolts (M) with O-ring (8) and lower isolation washers (10).

(7) Loosen the engine jacking screws (adjustment screws). Install upper isolation washers (5) and (10), steel washers and nuts. At locations (D) tighten the nuts on bolts (G) to a torque of 80 ± 5 lb.ft. (109 ± 7 N·m). Tighten the nuts on bolts (M) to a torque of 70 ± 5 lb.ft. (96 ± 7 N·m).

Installation of thrust components:

(8) Assemble each thrust component (3). Tighten bolts (A) to a torque of 30 ± 5 lb.ft. (40 ± 7N·m). With a .968"Ø (25Ø) drill, and using the holes in the thrust component as a guide, drill holes for bolts (B) through the thrust component and engine rail only.

Engine Mounting Rail Modification

(1) To install the sound isolation thrust components on earlier engines which have the shorter mounting rails (1), make and add a 5.25" (133.3) angle (2) to the rails. Later engines do not need this addition. See thrust component installation page 4.
