Installing 3N8000 (Rear) And 3N8008 (Front) Crankshaft Seal Conversion Groups{1160, 1161} Caterpillar

Installing 3N8000 (Rear) And 3N8008 (Front) Crankshaft Seal Conversion Groups{1160, 1161}

Usage:

D399 (35B, 91B) D398 (66B, 67B, 75B) D379 (68B, 69B, 76B) G399 (49C) G398 (73B) G379 (72B)

These conversion groups have the parts needed to install a new lip-type seal in place of the former piston ring type seal, thrower and baffle. When a 3N8008 Seal Group is installed, a new front adapter must also be used. See the chart to find the correct new adapter to install as a replacement for the former adapter.

(1) Remove rear baffle (1), thrower (2) and ring (3) from flywheel housing (4).

NOTICE

If ring (3) is not removed, it will cause damage to the engine.

(2) Remove adapter (5), baffle (6), thrower (7), and ring (8) from front accessory drive housing (9).

NOTICE

If ring (8) is not removed, it will cause damage to the engine. A new adapter must be installed; see the chart on page one.

(3) Remove any sharp particles from surface (A) of the crankshaft. Use 8M8060 Quick Cure Primer to clean surface (A).

(4) Use illustrations I and II as a guide to check groove (B) at each end of the crankshaft. See the information that follows:

I If the dimensions for groove (B) are the same as shown in illustration I, install the 7N1979 O-ring seal in the groove. Be careful to not damage the O-ring seal when installing the sleeve on a cold crankshaft.

NOTICE

Do not install the O-ring on a hot crankshaft. Heat will make the O-ring larger in size, and will result in the O-ring being cut in two when the wear sleeve is installed.

II If the dimensions for groove (B) are the same as shown in illustration II, the groove is not deep enough for installation of an O-ring seal. For this type of crankshaft, fill groove (B) with 9S3265 Retaining Compound before installation of the sleeve.

NOTE: In the illustrations that follow, the crankshaft shown has a 7N1979 O-ring Seal under the 3N7311 Sleeve. After installation of either the O-ring seal or the 9S3265 Retaining Compound (according to crankshaft type) the installation procedure for the sleeve is the same for either crankshaft.

(5) Use 8M8060 Quick Cure Primer to clean surface (D) on 3N7311 Wear Sleeve (10). Put 9S3265 Retaining Compound on surface (A), of the crankshaft, and surface (D), of the wear sleeve. Keep the surfaces clean. Install wear sleeve (10), on the crankshaft, with surface (F) to the engine. Use a rubber hammer to push the wear sleeve on the crankshaft beyond surface (H), as shown.

(6) Use four bolts (8S4754 for V8 or V12 engines; 8S4755 for V16 engines) and 5P3022 Installer (11) to push wear sleeve (10) against surface (G) of the crankshaft. Carefully tighten each bolt 1/2 turn at a time in the sequence shown. Do not remove installer (11) for a minimum of 30 minutes. Do not start the engine for a minimum of 1.5 hours. Remove the extra 9S3265 Retaining Compound.

NOTICE

There must not be any damage to surface (E) of the wear sleeve. Install two guide pins (12) and gasket (13).

(7) Use 6K4936 Bolts (14) and 3F1417 Washers (15) to install 3N3166 Seal (16) to 3N3168 Adapter (17). Tighten the bolts evenly a maximum of three turns at a time, in the sequence shown, to a torque of 32 ± 5 lb.ft. (43 ± 7).

(8) Use 1A9579 Bolts (18), 3B4505 Washers (19), and 3N3333 Spacers (20) to install 3N3166 Seal (21) to 3N3170 Adapter (22). Tighten the bolts evenly, a maximum of three turns at a time, in the sequence shown, to a torque of 18 ± 5 lb.ft. (24 ± 7).

(9) Put the same lubricant on the lip seal, surface (J) of installer (11), and on surface (E) of the wear sleeve as that being sealed. Lift the adapter by the edge, into position on guide pins (12).

NOTE: Do not lift the adapter by the seal. Slide the adapter to the engine until the lip seal makes contact with installer (11). Put a small force on the adapter. Gradually move the lip of the seal over installer (11). Push the adapter into the housing. Install ten bolts and lockwashers. Remove the guide pins. Put 8H5137 Gasket Sealer on two bolts and install with two lockwashers in the holes where the guide pins were removed. Tighten all the bolts evenly to a torque of 32 ± 5 lb.ft. (43 ± 7). Remove installer tool (11), if it has been in place at least 30 minutes. Remove extra 9S3265 Retaining Compound.
