Usage:
If the reconditioning procedure given in this instruction is done to the cylinder heads for the above earlier engines (engines before the spacer plate block), the cylinder heads can then be used for engines that have the spacer plate block.
(1) Install and fasten the cylinder head (with valve seats up) to the drill table of a radial drill. Use the 5P8701 Reamer and cutting oil to ream each of the twelve counterbores for water ferrules. Ream only to the bottom of the existing counterbore. Do not hold the reamer at the bottom of the counterbore too long or the counterbore can become oversize.
(2) Install a 5P8703 Insert (chamfer edge toward the inside of counterbore) into each reamed hole. Each insert must be flush (even) with the face of the cylinder head.
NOTE: In addition to installation of an insert in the counterbore for each water ferrule, six holes must be drilled through the head. The holes are to be drilled on the push rod compartment side of the cylinder head. These holes are used for the additional head bolts that are needed to fasten the cylinder head to the spacer plate block.
(3) The 5P8699 Tool Group and an extra 14.288 (.562") drill bit are needed to drill the six holes in the cylinder head, according to the procedure given. Components in the 5P8699 Tool Group are given in the chart that follows.
(4) Install and fasten cylinder head (1) to the drill table of a radial drill, with the valve seats up, as shown.
(5) Use the dowels in fixture assembly (2) as a guide, and put the fixture in position on cylinder head (1) as shown.
(6) Drill the two holes (A) according to the four step procedure that follows:
1. Put the 5P5253 Drill Bushing in one of the holes (A) of fixture assembly (2) and use the 5P8698 Drill Bit to drill through the cylinder head.
2. Put the 5P5254 Drill Bushing in the hole (A) and use the 5P8697 Core Drill to drill through the cylinder head.
(7) Remove any burrs (rough or sharp edges) from the edges of the new bolt holes.
(8) Put the 5P7328 Drill Bushing in one of the holes (B) of fixture assembly (2) and use the extra 14.288 (.562") drill bit (see step 3) to drill the hole through the cylinder head. [Cylinder head thickness at each location (B) is approximately 12.7 (.500").]
(9) Use the procedure given in step 8 to drill the other three holes (B). Remove any burrs (rough or sharp edges) from the edges of the new bolt holes.
