Usage:
The 5P7333 Tool Group and some additional tools are needed to make a repair to the cylinder heads of 3400 Series Engines that have loose bridge dowels. Remove the cylinder head from the engine to make the repair. This makes it easier to keep metal chips out of the engine while the drill and reamer are used. The content of the 5P7333 Tool Group is shown in the illustration on page 2. The part numbers of all tools needed, including the additional tools, are given in the tool chart.
NOTE: One 5P7324 Plug is needed for each bridge dowel hole that is to have a repair.
Repair Procedure
(1) Remove the valves from the cylinder head. See the Service Manual.
NOTE: To better control the feed and speed of the drill and the reamer, use a radial drill for this repair procedure.
(2) Fasten the cylinder head to table (1) by a method similar to that shown at location (A). Put 5P7329 Fixture (2) over the valve guides and install two "C" clamps (3) to hold the fixture in position as shown. NOTE: Put a piece of bar stock, or some similar type material at location (B), between the head of adjustable screws (4) and the bottom of the cylinder head, to prevent damage to the face of the cylinder head.
(3) Use a .531"Ø (13.5Ø) core drill (5) and drill the bridge dowel hole to a depth of .73" (18.5). Clean the metal chips from the hole, several times, to be sure of the correct depth of the hole.
(4) Install 5P7328 Bushing (6) in fixture (2). Use 5P7331 Reamer (7) to ream the hole. Use a small amount of cutting oil while the hole is reamed. Clean the metal chips from the hole several times, to make sure of the correct ream depth. The recommendation for feed and speed is 350 RPM at .012" (0.3) feed.
(5) Remove the 5P7328 Bushing (6) from fixture (2). Use the 5P7325 Driver to install a 5P7324 Plug in the hole. (Install the plug so the end with the chamfer is down.) Note: The plug can be installed without removal of fixture (2), but be sure to start the plug straight in the hole.
(6) Install the 5P7326 Bushing (8) in fixture (2). Use a .422" (10.7) drill bit (9) at a speed at 600-650 RPM with a feed of .005" (0.13) and drill through the plug. Install 5P7327 Bushing (10) in fixture (2) and use 5P7332 Reamer (11) to ream the hole in the plug. Run the reamer at 500 RPM with a .012" (0.3) feed.
(7) Remove fixture (2). Use 5P2406 Driver (12) to install a new bridge dowel (13).
