The correct assembly procedures for the 3N2400, 4N7979, 6N7690, 6N7691, 9N1353 and 9N2652 Fan Drive Pulley Assemblies must be used for maximum service life. The bracket identification and chart on page 2 shows the correct assembly procedure.
- 1 Identification of the bracket assembly is necessary to find the correct assembly procedure. 3N2379 Bracket Assembly (1) has a small hole in the shaft at the threads. 4N7894 Bracket Assembly (2) has a slot in the shaft at the threads. 6N7682 Bracket Assembly (3) has a dowel through the bracket and shaft.
1 Install bearing cups (1) and (2) in pulley (3). Put 2S3230 Bearing Lubricant in bearing cone (4). Install bearing cone (4) in bearing cup (1). Install seal (5) in pulley (3), so the sealing lip is toward bearing cone (4). Put a small amount of 2S3230 Bearing Lubricant on the lip of seal (5).
2 Install pulley (3) on shaft (6). Be careful to not damage the sealing lip of seal (5). Put 2S3230 Bearing Lubricant around shaft (6) until area (A) is one-third to one-half full of lubricant. Put 2S3230 Bearing Lubricant in bearing cone (7) and install the bearing in bearing cup (2). Install washer (8) and nut (9). Tighten nut (9) until the resistance to turning the pulley begins to increase. Loosen nut (9) until the hole in the shaft is in alignment with the next slot in the nut. Install cotter pin (10). Pulley (3) must have .001" - .010" (0.03 - 0.25) end clearance.
3 Install pulley (3) on shaft (11). Be careful to not damage the sealing lip of seal (5). Install the 4N7950 (yellow) Spacer (12) .440" (11.18). Put 2S3230 Bearing Lubricant around spacer (12) until area (A) is one-third to one-half full of lubricant. Put 2S3230 Bearing Lubricant in bearing cone (7) and install the bearing in bearing cup (2). Install washer (13), lock (14) and nut (15). Use a 5P3518 Spanner Wrench and tighten nut (15) to 30 ± 5 lb. ft. (40.8 ± 6.8 N·m).
4 Install sleeve (16) and pulley (3) on shaft (17). Be careful to not damage the sealing lip of seal (5). Install 4N7950 (yellow) Spacer (12) .440" (11.18). Put 2S3230 Bearing Lubricant around spacer (12) until area (A) is one-third to one-half full of lubricant. Put 2S3230 Bearing Lubricant in bearing cone (7) and install the bearing in bearing cup (2). Install washer (18) and nut (19). Tighten nut (19) to 110 ± 15 lb. ft. (150 ± 20 N·m).
5 Check the end clearance of pulley (3). Pulley (3) must have .001" - .010" (0.03 - 0.25) end clearance after assembly. CAUTION: If end clearance of the pulley is less than .001" (0.03), remove 4N7950 (yellow) Spacer (12) .440" (11.18) and install 4N7951 (green) Spacer .450" (11.43). If end clearance of the pulley is more than .010" (0.25), remove 4N7950 (yellow) Spacer (12) .440" (11.18) and install 4N7949 (white) Spacer .430" (10.92). Be sure to put 2S3230 Bearing Lubricant around the new spacer so that area (A) is one-third to one-half full of lubricant. Always put more lubricant in bearing cone (7) before installation of bearing cup (2). Install washer (13), lock (14), nut (15) or washer (18) and nut (19). Tighten nut (15) to 30 ± 5 lb. ft. (40.8 ± 6.8 N·m) or nut (19) to 110 ± 15 lb. ft. (150 ± 20 N·m). Check the end clearance of the pulley again to be sure it is .001" - .010" (0.03 - 0.25). Bend a part of lock (14) so that it will go into the slot in nut (15). If necessary, tighten nut (15) 30° maximum so that lock (14) will go into the slot in nut (15). Do not loosen nut (15) to bend lock (14).
6 Put 2S3230 Bearing Lubricant into area (B) until area (B) is one-third to one-half full of lubricant. For 3N2400, 4N7979 and 6N7960 Pulley Assemblies, install gasket (20), cover (21) and screws (22). Tighten screws (22) to 40 ± 7 lb. in. (4.5 ± .8 N·m). The head of each screw must be below outer surface (C) of cover (21). For 6N7691, 9N1353 and 9N2652 Pulley Assemblies, install hub (23), bolts (24), gasket (25) and plug (26). Tighten bolts (24) to 18 ± 5 lb. ft. (24 ± 7 N·m).
7 Clean all paint, dirt, grease and oil from the pulley bracket and the engine, where the two come together. Install the pulley on the engine. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 32 ± 5 lb. ft. (43.5 N·m) after adjusting the fan belt tension. Use only Caterpillar Grade 8 bolts and hardened washers. Use Caterpillar Grade 8 bolts to fasten fans to pulleys, covers or hubs.
