Shims are given with the service replacement bearing caps. Installation of the replacement bearing caps with the correct shim thickness will give the desired bearing alignment. See the instructions that follow.
(1) Remove the bearing caps, bearings and shaft. See the Service Manual.
(2) Install the new bearing cap without the bearings, shaft or shims. Use an inside micrometer or a dial bore indicator to measure the bearing bore in the vertical direction except for the idler bearing bores on 7231 Marine Gears which must be measured in the horizontal direction.
(3) Remove the bearing cap. Subtract the actual bore diameter measurement from the bore diameter shown in the chart. Install the shaft, bearings and bearing caps. Put shims as necessary under both sides (or both sides and the middle) of the bearing cap to give a thickness the same as the difference between the actual bore diameter and the bore diameter shown in the chart.
