Installation Of Wear Sleeves For Repair Of Groove Wear Caused By Lip-Type Seals{7558} Caterpillar

Installation Of Wear Sleeves For Repair Of Groove Wear Caused By Lip-Type Seals{7558}

Usage:

Lip-type seals can cause a groove to wear in the part that they seal against. Many times this part could be used again except for the groove wear. New wear sleeves are now available to install over the groove, to give a new seal surface to the worn part. This will let the worn part be used again and allow the use of the original part number seal. This instruction gives the part numbers of the wear sleeves and sleeve drivers (installation tools) and the procedure needed to make the repair. A chart gives the part number of sleeve to install according to the size of the wear surface that is to have the repair.

NOTE: If a wear sleeve is to be installed on a 1P7718 or 2P4722 Water Pump Shaft Assembly, (for D353 Engines), see SPECIAL PROCEDURES on page 11.

Wear Sleeves And Wear Sleeve Drivers

1 There is a specific wear sleeve driver to use for installation of each wear sleeve. The drivers are all either a type (A), (B) or (C) as shown above. As seen in the illustration, type (A) and type (C) drivers have a closed end (shown) and an open end (not shown). These two drivers can be used in only one way to install a wear sleeve. To use type (B) drivers (open on both ends), always put the end that has the rolled (round) part (R), next to the wear sleeve.

2 The illustration above shows a typical wear sleeve. The wear sleeve is made in one piece and has a wear surface (1) for the seal, and a flange (2). In most applications of the wear sleeve, it will be necessary to remove flange (2). Instructions for removal of flange (2) are given in WEAR SLEEVE INSTALLATION.

Wear Sleeve Installation

1 Carefully inspect the wear surface for the seal. Wear groove (A) shows typical wear by a lip-type seal. Clean the wear surface thoroughly. Use emery cloth (1) of 180 grit or finer to clean the wear surface. Use a file to make smooth any nicks or burrs (deep grooves or notches).

2 Hold wear sleeve (2) in the position shown, so the center of new wear surface (B) is over wear groove (A), then make a mark (C) that is even with the back of flange (D) of wear sleeve (2).

NOTE: If there is more than one wear groove, make sure that all wear grooves will be covered an even amount. If it is seen that flange (D) will be against a shoulder after it is installed, mark (C) is not needed; see step 5.

3 If groove (A) is a deep groove, fill it with a powdered metal epoxy and install the wear sleeve before the epoxy becomes hard. If the powdered metal epoxy is not needed, put 8M8060 Quick Cure Primer on the area around groove (A). Put a small amount of 9S3265 Retaining Compound on the area around groove (A) and on the inside of the new wear sleeve

4 Put the wear sleeve (2) in position so flange (D) goes on first, as shown. Be sure the wear sleeve is kept straight as it is installed. Use the correct sleeve driver and a press to install the wear sleeve to its correct position. If a press is not available, use a soft hammer with the sleeve driver, as shown, to install the wear sleeve.

NOTE: If a type (B) sleeve driver (see WEAR SLEEVES AND WEAR SLEEVE DRIVERS, step 1) is used, be sure to put the rolled (round) part (R) next to the wear sleeve.

5 If there is a chamfer (E) on the original wear surface for the seal, install the wear sleeve far enough so the end of the wear sleeve is beyond the chamfer as shown. If flange (D) of the wear sleeve is against a shoulder it does not need to be removed. If flange (D) is not against a shoulder, it must be removed; see step 6.

6 If flange (D) of the wear sleeve is not against a shoulder, and must be removed, use diagonal pliers (3) to cut flange (D) up to pre-cut line (F). Use straight pliers (4) to bend and remove flange (D).

Special Procedure

Before installation of a wear sleeve on a 1P7718 or 2P4722 Water Pump Shaft Assembly for D353 Engines, a part of the shaft must be machined.

1 Water pump shaft (1) must be machined according to the dimensions shown. Install the correct wear sleeve to fit the new machined size according to the procedure given in WEAR SLEEVE INSTALLATION. See the charts in this instruction to find the correct wear sleeve and sleeve driver to use for the new dimension on the shaft.
