Installation Of 9N6519 Or 1W1166 Water Separator Group{1263} Caterpillar

Installation Of 9N6519 Or 1W1166 Water Separator Group{1263}

Usage:

D330C, D333C, 1673C, 3304, 3306 and 3208 Industrial, Marine, Truck and Electric Set Engines

The 9N6519 or 1W1166 Water Separator Group can be installed on the above engines; see the specific Parts Book for the correct part number. This instruction gives the procedure needed to install the water separator, but does not give a specific location for the installation, because of the many different types of installation for these engines. Install the water separator in a location that has good access for visual inspection, and also has enough space for performance of the regularly needed maintenance. See pages 4 and 5.

NOTE: Install the water separator in the fuel supply line that comes from the fuel tank, and between the fuel tank and fuel filter.

NOTICE

Do not put base (1) in a vise during installation of the fittings in the steps that follow.

1 Either hole (A) or hole (B) in 8N9801 Base (1) can be used for connection of the inlet fuel line from the fuel tank. Hole (C) is for the connection of the fuel line that goes to the fuel filter. Install suitable 1/2"-20 thread fittings in holes (A) or (B) and (C).

NOTE: In the procedure that follows, 6V2611 Shut-off valves and 3K8460 Plugs will be installed in specific ports of base (1). Always install a 1J9671 O-ring Seal on these parts before they are installed in the port.

2 For those engine applications that have the water separator installed in a location that is higher than (above) the fuel tank, install a 6V2611 Shut-off Valve [for use as an air outlet (vent)] in either hole (A) or hole (B), that is opposite the fuel inlet fitting. If the water separator is installed in a location that is lower than (below) the fuel tank, install a 3K8460 Plug in either hole (A) or (B), that is opposite the fuel inlet fitting.

3 Install a 6V2611 Shut-off Valve (for use as a water drain) in either of the holes (D) or (E). Install a 3K8460 Plug in the hole (D) or (E) that is opposite the 6V2611 Shut-off Valve.

NOTICE

Do not install the water separator in a highly heated area, such as near the exhaust manifold.

4 Use a minimum of two bolts in any two of the bolt holes in the bracket on the back of base (1), and install the base as follows: Install the base so the word TOP is up and in a location that has good access for visual inspection, with enough space for performance of the necessary maintenance procedures. The location for installation of the base must have a minimum flat area of 1.250" × 3.00" (31.8 × 76.2) for good support when the base is fastened in position.

5 Use a clean cloth and carefully clean the three sealing surfaces (F). Put element (2) on base (1) so pin (3) is in alignment with the hole in the bottom of element (2). Put lock tab (G) in the slot (groove) in the bottom of base (1). Push clamp (4) with the heel of the hand and put upper lock tab (H) in the slot at the top of base (1). Make sure that lock tabs (G) and (H) are fastened correctly so clamp (4) will hold element (2) tight against base (1).

NOTE: Install clamp (4) so finger tab (J) is at the top as shown.

6 Connect the fuel inlet line from the fuel tank to fitting (5). Install the fuel line from fitting (6) to the fuel filter. Connect a piece of hose (7), if necessary, to water drain cock (8). (Installation of hose (7) will let water be drained away from the machine or engine.)

NOTE: The illustration for step 6 shows a shut-off valve (9). In some applications, a 3K8460 Plug will be installed at this location instead of valve (9). See steps 2 and 3 for an explanation.

Maintenance Of Water Separator

1 Look at the water separator and drain the water before the engine is started. When the water separator becomes one-half full of water during engine operation, stop the engine and drain the water. NOTE: Use the priming pump, if necessary, to prime the fuel system.

NOTE: When the inside of the glass cover becomes dirty and the water level cannot be seen, put a new filter element on the water separator. See REPLACEMENT OF WATER SEPARATOR FILTER ELEMENT on page 6.

2 Use the procedure that follows to drain water from the water separator: Close the fuel shutoff valve at the fuel tank. Open vent valve (A), if so equipped, then open drain valve (B). Let all water drain from the water separator. Close the vent valve (A), then close drain valve (B). Open the shutoff valve at the fuel tank.

Replacement Of Water Separator Filter Element

1 Stop the engine and close the fuel shutoff valve at the fuel tank. Clean all dirt from the water separator and the area around it. Open vent valve (A), if so equipped, and drain valve (B). Let all water drain from the water separator. Close the vent valve and drain valve.

2 Remove clamp (1) and pull filter element (2) off base (3). Use a clean cloth to clean the three sealing areas (C).

3 Install the new filter element (2) on base (3) so pin (4) fits in the outlet passage at the bottom of element (2). Install clamp (1) so lock tab (5) fits in the slot (groove) on the bottom of base (3) and the upper lock tab fits in the slot on top of base (3).

NOTE: Clamp (1) must be installed with finger tab (6) on top as shown. Make sure that clamp (1) holds filter element (2) tight against base (3).

NOTE: Use the priming pump, if necessary, to prime the fuel system.
