A new type of cartridge is now used in Sperry Vickers vane-type hydraulic pumps. The new cartridges have a thin layer of bronze on the flex plates (formerly cast iron only). Also, alignment pins through the cartridge are not used in the new type cartridges. Because there are no alignment pins, a special assembly procedure must be used. IMPORTANT: If the cartridge parts are not in alignment, it will not be possible to install the pump cover and body. The alignment procedure is easier if the complete pump is removed from the machine (instead of only the cartridge). Use the following special procedures in addition to the standard procedures for the disassembly and assembly of van-type pumps.
Typical Pump
1. Bolts (4) 2. Cover 3. Screws (2) 4. Pin 5. Inlet Support Plate 6. Seal Packs 7. Flex Plates 8. Rotor 9. Vanes 10. Inserts 11. Ring 12. Outlet Support Plate 13. O-ring Seals 14. Seal ring 15. Back-up Ring 16. Lock Ring 17. Retaining Ring 18. Bearing 19. Shaft 20. Key 21. Spacer Washer 22. Primary Seal 23. Secondary Seal 24. Body
Disassembly
- 1. Remove the pump from the machine. Put an alignment mark (A) on the pump body and cover for reference during assembly. After removal of the cartridge, put an alignment mark (B) across the outer surface of the cartridge parts for reference during assembly.
- 2. Put the cartridge on a flat surface with outlet support plate (1) down, and remove two Allen head screws (2). Remove inlet support plate (3). CAUTION: Do not slide flex plates (4) and (5) across ring (6) or rotor (7). Burrs on the ring or rotor can cause deep scratches in the bronze surface of the flex plates. Lift inlet flex plate (4) off the rotor and ring.
- 3. Put a small flat piece of wood on the rotor and ring. Hold the parts together and turn the cartridge over. CAUTION: Do not let ring (6) slide across flex plate (5). Remove outlet support plate (1). Lift outlet flex plate (5) off the rotor and ring. Keep flex plates (4) and (5) with their respective support plates.
- 4. Remove ring (6) from rotor (7). Find the location of arrow (C) on the outside diameter of rotor (7). Remove vanes (8) and inserts (9) in sequence starting at arrow (C). Keep the vanes and inserts in order for correct assembly.
Assembly
- 1. Clean all parts thoroughly. Remove all O-rings, back-up rings and seal packs; do not use these parts again.
- 2. Score marks less than .001" (0.025) deep and scratches less than .002" (0.051) deep can be removed with a fine oil stone. CAUTION: Use of a dry stone on the bronze surfaces of the flex plates will cause scratches.
- 3. Use a fine oil stone to remove any burrs from the edges of the cartridge parts.
- 4. If the location pins were removed from the inlet support plate, use a soft hammer to install new pins with the grooves inside of the inlet support plate.
- 5. Put the inlet and outlet support plates on a flat surface. Install seal packs (1) in the cavities of the plates with the O-rings down. Put flex plates (2) and (3) in position on their respective support plates with the bronze surface up. Put the alignment marks on the plates in alignment.
- 6. Put rotor (4) on a flat wooden board with arrow (A) toward the direction of rotation (toward the right for clockwise rotation or toward the left for counterclockwise rotation). Install vanes (5) and inserts (6) in their respective positions in the rotor. Make sure the sharp edge of each vane is toward the direction of rotation. All vanes must be free to move in their rotor slots.
- 7. Put ring (7) in position on rotor (4) and the vanes with arrow (B) toward the same direction as the arrow on the rotor. Put lubricant from the system on the top surface of the rotor and vanes. Install outlet support plate (8) and flex plate (2) together on the rotor and ring with all alignment marks in alignment.
- 8. Hold the cartridge together to prevent movement and turn the assembly over so the outlet support plate (8) is down. Put lubricant from the system on the top surface of the rotor and vanes. Install inlet support plate (9) and flex plate (3) together on the rotor and ring with all alignment marks in alignment.
NOTE: V-blocks can also be used instead of the pump body and cover to put the cartridge parts in correct alignment.
- 9. Install the two screws finger tight in the cartridge. Put the cartridge in position (without O-ring seals) in the pump body. Put the cover over the cartridge. Use the cover to get all cartridge parts in correct alignment. Carefully remove the cover to prevent movement of the cartridge. Tighten the screws to the correct torque specification, and again check the alignment of cartridge. Remove the cartridge and install the necessary O-ring seals and back-up rings. Install the cartridge and cover. Tighten the cover bolts to the correct torque specification.
