Caterpillar Service Technology Group is always looking for new ways to enhance the value of the Caterpillar products they service and sell. By finding new ways to used existing diagnostic tools, the serviceman can more efficiently do his job with tools he is familiar with. This article describes how a serviceman can use the 6V2100 Multitach and some accessories to:
-
- * Measure speed on a spark ignited engine.
- * Measure generator output frequency.
- * Measure speed on a spark ignited engine.
Spark Ignited Engine Speed
Engine speed can be quickly and easily measured by using the 6V2100 Multitach, the 6V4950 or 1U9139 Injection Line Pick-Up, and 6V6113 Amplifier. The connections can be made with the engine running.
1. Connect the 6V2100 Multitach to a suitable power source and connect the 6V6113 Amplifier to the "PHOTO IN" connector.
2. Connect the fuel injection line pickup connector to the amplifier and then place the fuel injection line pickup around the insulation of a high tension wire to a spark plug.
NOTE: Do not connect the fuel injection line pickup to high voltage or damage to the pickup or multitach may result. Do not connect the pickup to high tension wire if the insulation is damaged or cracked.
3. Press the "PH" key on the multitach. Set the "P/REV" value to 0.5. Press "R/MIN" to read engine speed on the multitach display. If the engine speed display is erratic when using this method on small engines with distributors, place the fuel injection line pickup on the coil output wire going to the distributor.
NOTE: When using the coil output wire, always set the "P/REV" value to one half the number of engine cylinders.
Generator Output Frequency
To measure generator output frequency on electrical power generator (EPG) sets, use the 6V2100 Multitach and the 9U5795 AC/DC Current Probe. Use the 9U5265 Adapter and 5P7362 Magnetic Input Cable to connect the two instruments together.
1. Connect the 6V2100 Multitach to a suitable power source and connect the 5P7362 Magnetic Input Cable to the "MAG/IN" connector.
2. Connect the 9U5795 AC/DC Current Probe connectors to the 9U5265 Adapter. Observe the color coding. Connect the 9U5265 Adapter to the 5P7362 Cable.
3. Turn ON the 9U5795 Probe.
4. Press the "P/REV" key and set this value to 6. Press the "R/MIN" key and the display will show generator output frequency with 0.1 Hz resolution.
NOTE: The load of the phase being measured should be at least 100 Amps to provide enough signal level to the multitach, but must not exceed 1000 Amps, the maximum current rating of the 9U5795 AC/DC Current Probe.
If the reading is erratic or does not work, use a multimeter to check the batteries in the 9U5795 AC/DC Current Probe. To check the batteries look in the 9U5795 AC/DC Current Probe Tool Operating Manual, NEHS0567, in the Battery Check section.
