There have been some reports of the 1R0716 Oil Filter Element collapsing during cold starts. When the filter element collapses, it can contaminate the lubrication system with filter material. Investigation revealed the filter element failures occurred on engines that had scuffing on the 9M0853 Plunger in the oil filter relief valve. The scuffing was on the side of the plunger that slides past the clean oil port in the oil filter base.
The failure of the 1R0716 Oil Filter Elements in the 3500 Family of Diesel Engines is a result of a combination of factors:
-
- * Cold weather startups with cold oil
- * Scuffing/sticking of the 9M0853 Plunger in the oil filter relief valve
- * Brittle center tube material in the 1R0716 Oil Filter Element
- * Cold weather startups with cold oil
There is a potential for a rupture of the center tube of the filter element when all three of the factors occur are present.
The plastic 9M0853 Plunger has been replaced by the steel 1P1367 Plunger. The new steel plunger is chrome plated and has a tighter fit in the plunger bore in the filter base. Tests indicate the new steel plunger will not stick against the oil port under the same conditions that caused the former plastic plunger to sometimes stick. The new steel 1P1367 Plunger is in effect as shown in Chart A.
If the engines are regularly cold started, Caterpillar recommends that the plastic 9M0853 Plunger in the oil filter relief valve in the filter base be replaced with the steel 1P1367 Plunger.
As an additional precaution, all of the 3500 Family of Diesel Engines now use the 2P4005 Oil Filter Element instead of the 1R0716 Oil Filter Element. The 2P4005 Element has a metal center tube. In the unlikely event of a filter collapse, the metal center tube tends to generate less debris that could contaminate the lube system. It is recommended that 2P4005 Oil Filter Elements be used on all of the 3500 Family of Diesel Engines in place of the 1R0716 Oil Filter Element until further notice. The 1R0716 Oil Filter Elements should continue to be used in all other applications. The 2P4005 Oil Filter Element went into effect in the 3500 Family of Diesel Engines as listed in Chart B.
