Caterpillar bucket tips and adapters are designed for optimum load carrying characteristics with a minimum of breakage. It is desirable, however, for the tip to fail when excessive loads are imposed on the bucket, rather than the more costly adapter. Longer competitive tips have been introduced to the field that could abuse bucket systems. While designed to provide more wear life, these tips, in some customer applications, may exert excessive bending loads on the adapters and base edges, exceeding their design strength.
Likewise, there are some longer tips available for rippers which, just as with buckets, can stress adapters to higher than designed for loads, accelerating wear out or fatigue fracture.
The use of these longer tips, can cause premature adapter, weld or base edge failures and falls within the limitation of "Improper Use Or Installation" as defined in the Ground Engaging Tool Warranty SELF5138. Customers, therefore, should be aware that failure of Caterpillar G.E.T. components caused by the use of these longer competitive tips, will not be warranted.
