When using the K110, K130, and K150 bucket tips in high temperature applications, such as in steel mills, the compressible elastomer of the retainers will disintegrate and result in loss of retention and eventually the tips. Loss of retainers is also possible in demolition applications and anywhere heavy impact on the retainers can occur. Slag version retainers are available which have no elastomer and rely on a small bolt and nut to hold the retainer's latch in engagement. Slag retainers are also available for the new K110 Short Swing Latch tip systems.

The retainers are installed by loosening the twelve-point bolt with a thin wall socket, pulling the latch back for clearance in the tip, inserting the retainer into the tip ear cavity, extending the latch as deep into the tip as possible and then tightening the bolt. Specific tightening torques are required.
