Start By:

  1. Remove the recoil spring and the track adjuster. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Recoil Spring and Track Adjuster - Remove".

Note: Prior to disassembly of the recoil spring assembly, make sure that Tooling (A) is on a level surface.

Note: Prior to disassembly, thoroughly clean the outside surface of the recoil spring assembly.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from recoil spring force.

Recoil spring force, if not relieved, can result in personal injury or death.

Relieve spring force before removing threaded retainer, performing repairs on recoil spring housing, or removing recoil spring.

  3. Install Tooling (D) on Tooling (B), as shown.

    Illustration 4g00832545

Note: Two adjustable supports (1), reaction plate (2), and movable plate (3) are part of Tooling (A).

  4. Position two supports (1) of Tooling (A) in order to support the recoil spring assembly. Make sure that the two supports are level.

  5. Adjust the spacing between reaction plate (2) and movable plate (3). The spacing is approximately the same length as the free length of the recoil spring.

    Typical example

Note: Do not remove the lifting device from recoil spring assembly (4) until the recoil spring assembly is centered and locked in Tooling (A).

Note: The recoil spring assembly may be installed in Tooling (A) from the end. In this case, reaction plate (2) must be removed. Then reinstall the reaction plate after the recoil spring assembly is in place on two adjustable supports (1).

  6. Use a suitable lifting device to place the recoil spring assembly in position on two adjustable supports (1) in Tooling (A). Adjust the two adjustable supports until the centerline of the recoil spring assembly and the centerline of Tooling (A) are aligned.

  7. Reposition the recoil spring assembly until the retaining rod and the locknut are centered in the hole in reaction plate (2). Refer to Illustration 6.

    Illustration 7g00832618

  8. After the recoil spring assembly is centered, install pins (5) on the back side of the reaction plate , as shown.

  9. Operate Tooling (B) enough to hold the recoil spring assembly in position between the reaction plate and the movable plate. Make sure that the recoil spring assembly is centered. Remove the suitable lifting device.

  11. Remove bolts (8) and strap (9).

  12. Use Tooling (E) to remove special nut (7) from the end of the recoil spring assembly. Retract the rod on Tooling (B) until the recoil spring is free.

  13. Open covers (6) on Tooling (A). Fasten a suitable lifting device to the recoil spring assembly. Remove the reaction plate in order to remove the recoil spring assembly from Tooling (A).

  14. Separate the components of the recoil spring assembly.

  15. Remove support (13) and recoil spring (12).

  16. Remove tube (11) from adjuster assembly (10).
