NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Use Tooling (D) in order to install lip seal (10). Install lip seal (10) so that the lip of the seal faces the inside of the hub.

    Note: Lubricate lip seal (10) with the lubricant that is being sealed.

  1. Apply Tooling (E) to the back side of thrust ring (9) in order to hold thrust ring (9) in place. Install thrust ring (9) .

  1. Adjust Tooling (C) so that Dimension (X) measures 145 mm (5.7 inch). Install Tooling (C) to planetary carrier (4) and attach a suitable lifting device to Tooling (C). The weight of planetary carrier (4) is approximately 209 kg (461 lb). Position planetary carrier (4). Install sun gear (6) to planetary carrier (4). Install Tooling (A) in order to hold sun gear (6) in place.

  1. Install O-ring seals (8) and (7) .

  1. Align the gears in planetary carrier (4) and push planetary carrier (4) into the hub until planetary carrier (4) is 25 mm (1.0 inch) from the hub. Install Tooling (B) .

    Note: Tooling (B) must be installed to a depth of 25 mm (1.0 inch) in order to hold planetary carrier (4) .

  1. Install bolts (5). Tighten bolts (5) to a torque of 430 ± 60 N·m (317 ± 44 lb ft). Remove Tooling (B). Install remaining bolts (5) .

  1. Remove Tooling (C) .

  1. Install the outer axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle - Install".

  1. Install drain plug (11) and the O-ring seal. Fill the final drive with oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Final Drive Oil Level - Check".

  1. Refer to Steps 1 through 9 for the planetary carrier on the opposite side of the machine.

  1. The following procedure is for the left side of the machine.

    1. Use a suitable lifting device in order to position ladder assembly (2) to the original position. The weight of ladder assembly (2) is approximately 27 kg (60 lb). Install bolts (3), the washers, and clamps (1) .

  1. The following procedure is for the right side of the machine.

    1. Raise the counterweight. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Counterweight Control" for the correct procedure.
