Axle Shaft - Remove

Start By:

Install steering frame lock pin. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock - Remove and Install".

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat^® products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Move the machine until drain plug (3) is in the DOWNWARD position. Remove drain plug (3) and drain the oil into a suitable container.
Remove six bolts (1), the washers, and cover assembly (2).

Remove O-ring seal (4).

Install Tooling (A) in the end of axle shaft (5). Using Tooling (A), pull axle shaft (5) from the final drive by approximately 500 mm (20 inch).
Attach a hoist and a suitable lifting device to axle shaft (5).
Remove axle shaft (5). The weight of the axle shaft is approximately 38 kg (84 lb).

Remove retaining ring (8), sun gear (6), and thrust washer (7) from axle shaft (5).
Note: Take note of the orientation of thrust washer (7) for assembly purposes.
