Final Drive - Remove - Right and Left Side

Start By:

  1. Separate the track. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Track - Separate".


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Drain the oil from the final drive. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Final Drive Oil - Change".

  1. Remove the outer drive axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle - Remove".

  1. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for the opposite side.

  1. The following procedure is for the right side of the machine.

    1. Lower the counterweight. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Counterweight Control" for the correct procedure.

  1. The following procedure is for the left side of the machine.

    1. Attach a suitable lifting device to ladder assembly (2). The weight of ladder assembly (2) is approximately 27 kg (60 lb). Remove clamps (1), bolts (3), and the washers. Remove ladder assembly (2) .

  1. Adjust Tooling (A) until Dimension (X) is equal to 145 mm (5.7 inch).

  1. Remove two bolts (5) and install Tooling (A) to final drive (4). Attach a suitable lifting device to Tooling (A). The weight of final drive (4) is approximately 670 kg (1480 lb).

  1. Remove bolts (6) and (7). Do not remove bolts (8) .

  1. Remove final drive (4) and the O-ring seal.

  1. Repeat Steps 6 through 9 for the opposite side.
