Diesel engine exhaust contains products of combustion which may cause personal injury. Always start and operate the engine in a well ventilated area, and, if in an enclosed area, vent the exhaust to the outside. |
Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement. Sudden movement of the machine or release of oil under pressure can cause injury to persons on or near the machine. To help prevent possible injury before testing and adjusting any hydraulic system, perform the procedure that follows: |
Perform the following procedures prior to any tests, adjustments, or troubleshooting.
Warming the Oil
Warm the oil to normal operating temperature prior to any tests, adjustments or performing troubleshooting checks.
To effectively warm the oil, it may be necessary to operate the machine.
With the hoist control in the HOLD position, start the engine and move the hoist control to the RAISE position for ten seconds. Then move the hoist control to the LOWER position for ten seconds. Raising and lowering the body several times will warm the oil.
Preparing the Machine for Maintenance
Before you perform any testing or adjusting, park the machine on a level surface. Move the parking brake control to the ENGAGED position. Lower the body and move the hoist control to the FLOAT position.
Block the wheels.
Install the steering frame locks before entering the area around the oscillating hitch. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7347, "Steering Frame Lock".
If the body must be raised, perform the following procedure in order to install the body prop.
Note: The body must be empty.
- Raise the body enough to lift the body prop and then move the hoist control to the HOLD position.
- Lift the body prop.

- Move the hoist control to the FLOAT position. This will allow the body to lower slowly until the weight of the body is supported by the body prop.
Note: The body must be raised before the body prop can be lowered.
Allow only one operator on the machine. Keep all other personnel away from the machine. Also, all personnel should be visible to the operator.
Release of the Pressure in the Brake Systems.
Allow only one operator on the machine. Keep all other personnel away from the front of the machine or keep all other personnel in the view of the operator.
- Prepare the machine for maintenance. Refer to "Preparing the Machine for Maintenance".
- Move the start switch to the 1 position.
- Install a 6V-7830 Pressure Gauge to the test ports in order to check that the hydraulic pressure is released before loosening, tightening or removing any fitting, any hose, or any component.

- Cycle the parking brake between the ON and OFF positions until the pressure in the accumulator for the parking brake is exhausted.
- Pump the service brake pedal until the accumulators for the service brakes are exhausted.
- Carefully loosen the filler cap on the hydraulic tank in order to release the pressure in the tank.
- Turn the engine start switch to the OFF position.
