Personal injury or death can result from escaping fluid under pressure. Escaping fluid under pressure, even a very small pin-hole size leak, can penetrate body tissue and cause serious injury and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury. Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak. |
Personal injury or death can result from machine articulation or movement. Machine frames can move and a person can be crushed. Connect the steering frame lock link between the front and rear frames before working on machine. |
NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
ReferenceRefer to Testing and Adjusting, "System Pressure - Release" for the correct procedures for relieving hydraulic oil pressure.

- Start the engine. Position the machine so that the machine is pointing straight ahead.
- Operate the engine at high idle. Move the tilt control lever to the TILT BACK position in order to increase the oil to normal operating temperature.
Note: Do not stall the tilt control lever in the TILT position for more than 10 seconds. If necessary, release for 10 seconds and repeat the procedure.
- After the oil has reached normal operating temperature, lower the work tool to the ground.
- Stop the engine.
- Move steering frame lock (1) to the LOCKED position.

- Engage the parking brake. Move the transmission direction selector to the NEUTRAL position.
- Attach a 0 to 6000 kPa (0 to 870 psi) pressure gauge to pressure tap (3) . Pressure tap (3) is located in area shown in Illustration 3. Pressure tap (3) is supply pressure for the pilot valve.

- Install pressure taps in each pilot pressure line shown in Illustration 2. Attach a 0 to 1000 kPa (0 to 145 psi) pressure gauge to each pressure tap (2) .
NOTICE |
---|
Bumping or turning the steering wheel could cause excessive oil pressure in the hydraulic oil line that connects to the pressure gauge. The excessive oil pressure could cause damage to the pressure gauge. Do not bump or turn the steering wheel during the following steps. |
- Start the engine. Run the engine at high idle.
- Record the pressure reading on the pressure gauge that is attached to pressure tap (3) . The reading should equal 3450 ± 250 kPa (500 ± 36 psi).
- If the pressure reading for pressure tap (3) is not to specifications, use the following reference to check the pilot pressure.
ReferenceFor the correct procedure to check the pilot pressure for the implement hydraulic system, refer to the Service Manual module for Testing and Adjusting, "Steering Pilot System Pressure - Test" for the machine that is being serviced.
- Record the pressure reading on each pressure gauge that is attached to pressure tap (2) . The reading should equal 165 ± 15 kPa (24 ± 2 psi).
- Stop the engine.
- If the pressure reading for pressure taps (2) are not to specification, follow the procedure below.
- Measure distance (A) . This measurement is the distance that (5) protrudes beyond (4) .
- Loosen locknut (4) and remove retainer assembly (5) .
- Turn adjustment screws (6) clockwise in order to increase the pressure. Turn adjustment screws (6) counterclockwise in order to decrease the pressure.

- Once the correct pressure reading is achieved, reinstall retainer assembly (5) and tighten locknut (4) to 75 ± 7 N·m (55 ± 5 lb ft). Set distance (A) equal to the measurement recorded in Step 14.
