Personal injury or death can result from escaping fluid under pressure. Escaping fluid under pressure, even a very small pin-hole size leak, can penetrate body tissue and cause serious injury and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury. Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak. |
NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
Reference: Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "System Pressure - Release" for the correct procedures for relieving hydraulic oil pressure.
- Install the steering frame lock into the LOCKED position, as shown.

- Remove the steering cylinder crossover relief valve (2). The steering cylinder crossover relief valve is located in the steering control valve. The steering control valve is located on the left side of the machine. The steering cylinder crossover relief valve needs to be bench tested. Loosen locknut (1) and remove the valve.

- The pressure of the relief valve should be 29100 ± 700 kPa (4220 ± 100 psi). Adjust the valve pressure, if necessary. Loosen locknut (3). Turn adjustment screw (4) counterclockwise in order to lower the pressure of the valve. Turn adjustment screw (4) clockwise in order to increase the pressure of the valve. Hold adjustment screw in place and tighten locknut (3) after the correct pressure is reached. The valve is faulty if the adjustment screw does not affect the pressure. Replace the valve.
- Install the relief valve into the steering control valve. The valve should be installed with a torque of 60 ± 7 N·m (44 ± 5 lb ft).
