Personal injury or death can result from escaping fluid under pressure. Escaping fluid under pressure, even a very small pin-hole size leak, can penetrate body tissue and cause serious injury and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury. Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak. |
Personal injury or death can result from machine articulation or movement. Machine frames can move and a person can be crushed. Connect the steering frame lock link between the front and rear frames before working on machine. |
NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
ReferenceRefer to Testing and Adjusting, "System Pressure - Release" for the correct procedures for relieving hydraulic oil pressure.

- Position the machine so that the machine is in the STRAIGHT AHEAD position.
- Move steering frame lock (1) to the LOCKED position.

- Engage the parking brake. Move the transmission direction selector to the NEUTRAL position.
- Attach a 0 to 4000 kPa (0 to 580 psi) pressure gauge to pressure tap (2) . Pressure tap (2) is located on the right side of the machine and to the right of the steering control valve. Pressure tap (2) is pilot pressure for left steering.

- Start the engine. Operate the engine at high idle. Move the tilt control lever to the TILT BACK position in order to increase the temperature of the oil to normal operating temperature. The oil is at normal operating temperature when the hydraulic oil temperature indicator is between the first mark and the second mark.
- After the oil has reached normal operating temperature, position the work tool slightly off the ground. Run the engine at low idle.
- In order to obtain a reliable pressure reading, turn the steering wheel counterclockwise to the FULLY TURNED position.
Note: During the following step, do not keep the steering pump at stall condition for more than 10 seconds. If necessary, release the steering wheel and wait for 30 seconds before you repeat the step.
- Record the pressure reading on the pressure gauge.
- Run the engine at high idle. Repeat Steps 7 and 8.
- The recorded pressures should be 3450 ± 200 kPa (500 ± 29 psi).
- Stop the engine. Lower the work tool to the ground.
- Relieve the hydraulic oil pressure. Use the reference at the beginning of this procedure to relieve any hydraulic oil pressure.
- Remove the pressure gauge from pressure tap (2) .
- Install the pressure gauge to pressure tap (3) . Pressure tap (3) is located on the right side of the machine to the left of the steering control valve.

- Run the engine at low idle.
- In order to obtain a reliable pressure reading, turn the steering wheel clockwise to the FULLY TURNED position.
Note: During the following step, do not keep the steering pump at stall condition for more than 10 seconds. If necessary, release the steering wheel and wait for 30 seconds before you repeat the step.
- Record the pressure reading on the pressure gauge.
- Run the engine at high idle. Repeat Steps 16 and 17.
- Remove the pressure gauge from pressure tap (3) .
