Start By:

  1. Release the pressure from the steering accumulators. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Steering Accumulator Pressure - Release" for the proper procedure.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from the sudden release of high pressure oil.

Be sure the engine has been shut off for a minimum of five minutes to be sure that the accumulator pressure is zero.

The accumulator is filled with dry nitrogen. Do not loosen or remove the valve or cap from the top of the accumulator. A purge screw at the bottom of the accumulator can be used to release the pressure that is left in the system.

------ WARNING! ------

Pressurized fluids can cause injury or death.

Before disassembling any lines, controls, or accumulator, be sure that the pilot system hydraulic accumulator pressure is zero.

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the removal procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.

Note: Put identification marks on all hose assemblies and on all tube assemblies for installation purposes. Plug all hose assemblies and all tube assemblies. This will help to prevent fluid loss and this helps to prevent contaminants from entering the system.

  1. Turn the wheels to the right.

  2. Drain the steering hydraulic tank into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Steering System Oil - Change".

  5. Attach Tooling (A) and Tooling (B) to steering accumulator (1). The weight of steering accumulator (1) is approximately 140 kg (310 lb). Remove the steering accumulator (1).

Note: If only one steering accumulator (1) is removed, ensure that the remaining steering accumulators are adequately supported.

  6. Repeat Step 5 for the remaining steering accumulators.
