Introduction

This Special Instruction outlines the basic procedures to repair worn pin bores or elongated pin bores on the following machines: compact wheel loaders, small wheel loaders and integrated toolcarriers. Repairs include adding metal to the pin bores by applying welds to the bores and machining the bores to the correct dimensions.

This special instruction also lists the dimensions for the following assemblies: articulated hitches, pin bores, lift arms, levers, oscillating rear axle assemblies and bearings for buckets and forks. The assemblies in this publication are used on the following machines: small wheel loaders, compact wheel loaders and integrated toolcarriers.

Use the dimensions in this publication to ensure that the parts are within specifications. The dimensions can also be used in order to repair minor damage.

Note: All of the dimensions are used in order to manufacture the parts. The dimensions are also used to recondition the parts. Repair is encouraged to reduce replacement of the assemblies. However, the extent of the repair should determine the need for replacement.

For Disassembly and Assembly instructions, refer to your machine's Service Manual, Parts Manual, and the Operations and Maintenance Manual. For welding information, refer to the bulletin from the Caterpillar Service Technology Group (CSTG), NEHS0513.

Do not perform any procedure in this publication until you understand the information that is contained in this document.

In the following illustrations, dimensions will be indicated by letters. D stands for diameter. S stands for the spacing between items. T stands for the thickness of an object. W stands for width. L stands for length. R stands for the radius.

Preparing the Pin Bores for Repair

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from flame cutting or welding on painted areas.

The effect of gasses from burned paint is a hazard to the person doing the cutting or welding.

Do not flame cut or weld on painted areas.

----------------------

Remove paint, rust, dirt, and scale with a wire brush or by buffing or grinding. Remove any oil or grease with an approved Caterpillar solvent.

All grease, water, paint, and other foreign material must be removed from the pin bore prior to welding. Any of these materials will discharge gas which will cause porosity in the weld deposit. Water and rust will cause hydrogen embrittlement. Hydrogen embrittlement causes cracks in the weld deposit.

Cover all surfaces, bores, and threads which are not selected for repair. Remove the covers only when the repair work is finished.

Inspection of the Pin Bores

  1. Clean the areas around the pin bores.

  1. Inspect all the pin bores.

  1. If a pin bore is worn or elongated, remove the part from the machine. Refer to your machine's Service Manual for disassembly instructions.

  1. Once the part is removed from the machine, clean the pin bores. Refer to the ""Preparing the Pin Bores for Repair" " section of this publication.

  1. Inspect the pin bores.

    Pin bores must be inspected prior to any machining or welding. Cracks will occur in the thinner sections around the pin bores. For a quality repair, all cracks must be removed prior to machining.

    To locate cracks in a pin bore, use a dye penetrant or a magnetic particle inspection process. Surfaces should be cleaned and any surface irregularities must be removed before you inspect the parts.

  1. Cut out defects to a depth of 6 mm (0.24 inch) beyond the bottom of the defect. Refer to ""Machining Elongated Bores" " in this publication.

Machining Elongated Bores

Metal to metal contact of the pin bore to any frame member can result in material deformation. Machining prior to welding results in a concentric bore. Machining also stabilizes the base material for welding.

A vertical or horizontal mill can be used for machining the bores. Single point tooling is normally used for cutting the bores to specified dimensions. Caterpillar recommends the use of the following carbide cutting tools:

  • C5 for a rough cut

  • C7 for a smooth surface finish

Set the speed of the spindle between 380 rpm to 600 rpm. The speed of the spindle must not exceed 600 rpm. The feed rate for the spindle is 0.15 to 0.25 mm (0.006 to 0.01 inch).

For doing repairs in the field, Caterpillar recommends the use of 1U-8660 Boring Bar . The hydraulic boring bar is equipped with several attachments. The attachments are needed in order to machine the pin bores to the correct dimensions.

The 1U-8660 Boring Bar can be set up in order to allow machining and welding without adjusting the 1U-8660 Boring Bar .

Applying Welds to a Pin Bore

Once the machining is finished, the metal must be prepared for welding. Follow the instructions below in order to correctly apply welds to the pin bores.

Welding Procedures

    ------ WARNING! ------

    Personal injury or death can result from fumes, gases and ultraviolet rays from the weld arc.

    Welding can cause fumes, burn skin and produce ultraviolet rays.

    Keep your head out of the fumes. Use ventilation, exhaust at the arc, or both, to keep fumes and gases from your breathing area. Wear eye, ear and body protection before working.

    Protect yourself and others; read and understand this warning. Fumes and gases can be dangerous to your health. Ultraviolet rays from the weld arc can injure eyes and burn skin. Electric shock can cause death.

    Read and understand the manufacturer's instructions and your employer's safety practices. Do not touch live electrical parts.

  1. Clean the pin bore. The area around the pin bore must also be cleaned. Refer to ""Preparing the Pin Bores for Repair" " in this publication.

  1. Inspect the pin bore. If a defect is found, remove the fault by cutting or machining. Refer to ""Machining Elongated Bores" " for instructions in order to eliminate the fault.

  1. Preheat the base metal of the pin bore to a temperature of 95° ± 10°C (203° ± 18°F). Preheating the metal will prevent cracking of the base metal. Preheating will also reduce the chances of hydrogen embrittlement.

  1. Use an automated 1U-9600 Welding Group in order to correctly build up a pin bore with welds. Automated welding will result in clean, even metal deposition.

    The 1U-9600 Welding Group offers improved performance over SMAW and GMAW welding systems.

    If the 1U-9600 Welding Group is not available, you can use an E7018 SMAW electrode. The E7018 SMAW electrode has a diameter of 3.18 mm (0.13 inch).

    If an E7018 SMAW electrode cannot be found, you can also use a 1U-5232 Welding Rod or GMAW welding.

    Refer to Table 1 for welding parameters.

    Outline the pin bores with welds (A). Apply transverse welds (B) to the bores. The transverse welds should connect the welds which outline the pin bores.

  1. Apply a weld (A) to each opening of the pin bore. Refer to Illustration 1.

    Note: Before you begin to weld on the pin bore, preheat the metal to 95 °C (203 °F).

  1. Apply multiple welds (B) to the length of the pin bore. The welds must connect the welds which outline the pin bore. Refer to Illustration 1.

    Note: Allow the welds to slowly cool. Repair any welds by removing the existing weld. Apply a weld to the area which is being repaired. Before you begin welding again, you must preheat the pin bore.

  1. Machine the welds to the correct dimensions. Dimensions for most pin bores are found in this publication.

Protecting the Welds

New welds must be painted. Paint will protect the welds against rusting. Paint the welds with an authorized Caterpillar paint. The paint will help prevent rust from forming on the new welds. Refer to the following instructions for preparing the welds for painting and for painting the welds.

Finishing the Welds and Painting the Welds

  1. Protect all finished bores. Cover the bores in order to prevent paint and other material from entering the bores.

  1. Grind all the welds to a smooth finish.

  1. Remove any spatter from the surrounding areas around the welds.

  1. Shot blast the welds and surrounding areas prior to painting.

  1. Paint the welds with a paint that is approved by Caterpillar.

  1. Remove all protective outer coverings from the bores.

  1. Inspect the grease passages for obstructions before you install new bearings. If the grease passages become blocked, the grease which is used to lubricate the bearings will not reach the bearings. Failure to lubricate the bearings will result in damage to the bearings.
