Cylinder Head - Remove

Start By:

  1. Remove the fuel injection nozzles. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fuel Injection Nozzles - Remove".
  2. Remove the air inlet manifold. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Inlet Manifold - Remove".
  3. Remove the exhaust manifold. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Exhaust Manifold - Remove and Install".
  4. Remove the rocker shaft and pushrods. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Rocker Shaft and Pushrods - Remove".


NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Gradually loosen the cylinder head bolts in reverse order of the numbered sequence that is shown in illustration 1. This will help prevent distortion of the cylinder head.

    Note: Use a 14 mm (0.55 inch) deep well socket in order to remove cylinder head bolts (1) .

  1. Install Tool (A) and a suitable lifting device to cylinder head (2) .

    Note: Do not use a pry bar to remove the cylinder head from the cylinder block.

  1. Use a suitable lifting device in order to remove cylinder head (2) from the cylinder block. The weight of the cylinder head is 25 kg (55 lb).

    Note: Immediately remove any coolant that enters the cylinder bores in order to prevent corrosion.


    NOTICE

    Place the cylinder head on a surface that will not scratch the face of the cylinder head.


  1. Remove cylinder head gasket (3) from the engine.

    Note: Remove any gasket material from the cylinder block that may remain from the removal of the cylinder head gasket.

  1. Check the condition of locating dowels (4). If the locating dowels are damaged, use new parts for replacement.
