Usage:

543 ASJ

------ WARNING! ------

To prevent personal injury when checks are made while the machine is in operation, make sure only approved personnel are on the machine. Keep other personnel off the machine and in view of the operator. Make sure checks are done in an open area.

----------------------

Note: Use the information in the reference to prepare the machine for this test.

Reference: For the correct procedure to prepare the machine for this test, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting" for the machine that is being serviced.

  1. Make sure that the machine is resting on a smooth, level surface. The machine should be moved away from other operating machines and away from personnel.

  1. Permit only one operator on the machine. Keep other personnel away from the machine or in the operator's sight.

  1. Lower the work tool to the ground when you are not testing the work tool.

  1. Warm the hydraulic oil to normal operating temperature. Normal operating temperature is 45 °C (115 °F) to 70 °C (160 °F). Use the following procedure in order to warm the hydraulic oil.

    1. Operate the engine at 1800 RPM to 2000 rpm.

    1. Extend the lift arms until the cylinders bottom out.

    1. Operate the tilt cylinders back and forth until you reach the normal operating temperature.

  1. Operate the engine at high idle. High idle speed is 2350 ± 50 rpm.

  1. Perform the following steps in order to test the operating speed of the lift cylinders.

    1. Fully lower the lift arms. Raise the lift arms to the full up position. Measure the time with a stopwatch.

    1. Fully raise the lift arms. Operate the lift arms to the full down position. Measure the time with a stopwatch.

    1. Refer to the specification in Table 1 for the operating speed of the lift arms.

      Table 1
Operating Speed of the Lift Cylinders
      Function     Speed (sec)
      RAISE     2.9 to 3.5
      LOWER     1.8 to 2.2

  1. Perform the following steps in order to test the operating speed of the steering cylinders.

    1. Fully articulate the machine to the right. With a stopwatch, measure the time that is required to fully steer the machine to the left.

    1. Fully articulate the machine to the left. With a stopwatch, measure the time that is required to fully steer the machine to the right.

    1. Refer to the specification in Table 2 for the operating speed of the steering cylinders.

      Table 2
Operating Speed of the Steering Cylinders
      Function     Speed (sec)
      LEFT     2.9 to 3.4
      RIGHT     2.9 to 3.4

  1. Use the following steps in order to test the operating speed of the grapple cylinders.

    1. Open the grapple arms. With a stopwatch, measure the time that is required to fully extend the grapple arm cylinders.

    1. Close the grapple arms. With a stopwatch, measure the time that is required to fully retract the grapple arm cylinders.

    1. Refer to the specification in Table 3 for the operating speed of the grapple arm cylinders.

      Table 3
Operating Speed of the Grapple Arm Cylinders
      Function     Speed (sec)
      OPEN     0.7 to 0.9
      CLOSE     0.8 to 1.0

  1. Use the following steps in order to test the operating speed of the collector arm cylinders.

    1. Open the collector arms. With a stopwatch, measure the time that is required to fully extend the collector arm cylinders.

    1. Close the collector arms. With a stopwatch, measure the time that is required to fully retract the collector arm cylinders.

    1. Refer to the specification in Table 4 for the operating speed of the collector arm cylinders.

      Table 4
Operating Speed of the Collector Arm Cylinders
      Function     Speed (sec)
      OPEN     0.7 to 0.9
      CLOSE     0.8 to 1.0

  1. Use the following steps in order to test the operating speed of the shear cylinders.

    1. Open the shear cylinders. With a stopwatch, measure the time that is required to fully extend the shear cylinders.

    1. Close the shear cylinders. With a stopwatch, measure the time that is required to fully retract the shear cylinders.

    1. Refer to the specification in Table 5 for the operating speed of the shear cylinders.

      Table 5
Operating Speed of the Shear Cylinders
      Function     Speed (sec)
      OPEN     1.5 to 1.9
      CLOSE     2.0 to 2.4

  1. Use the following steps in order to test the operating speed of the tilt cylinders.

    1. Fully extend the tilt cylinders. With a stopwatch, measure the time that is required to fully extend the tilt cylinders.

    1. Fully retract the tilt cylinders. With a stopwatch, measure the time that is required to fully retract the tilt cylinders.

    1. Refer to the specification in Table 6 for the operating speed of the tilt cylinders.

      Table 6
Operating Speed of the Tilt Cylinders
      Function     Speed (sec)
      BACK     2.3 to 2.9
      FORWARD     3.9 to 4.7

  1. If the travel times are not correct, check the following conditions.

    • Check the implement pump flow.

    • Check the line relief valves in the control valves.

    • Check the valve spools in the control valves.

    • Check the piston seals in the cylinders.
