Reference: Service Magazine, SEPD0442, 09 November 1998, "Improved Wheel Bearing Cone Anti-Rotation System Prevents Wheel Bearing Cones From Rotating On The Axle Housing"
Description of Change: The retaining pin is no longer used to prevent the bearing cone from rotating. As a result, the machined slot has also been removed from the rear spindle and the bearing cone.
Adaptable To: The 4D-4324 Bearing Cone replaces the former 107-2270 Bearing Cone and the former 107-2272 Bearing Cone. The 5P-0505 Bearing Cone replaces the former 107-2271 Bearing Cone. The 4D-4324 Bearing Cone and the 5P-0505 Bearing Cone are effective with the following machines: 773D (S/N: 7CS777), 773E (S/N: BDA73) and 775D (S/N: 8AS603). The new bearing cones are adaptable to all earlier machines.
It is acceptable to use a non-laser hardened spindle with a non-pinned bearing.
Note: Caterpillar recommends the use of laser hardened spindles. The laser hardened rear spindles extend the service life of the spindle.
