Usage:

769D BBB

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can occur if personnel are trapped between the wheel and the frame.

The steering system is hydraulically controlled and wheels can crush personnel during movement.

Use caution when working between the wheels and the frame. If the wheels must be turned, ensure that all personnel are clear of the machine before any movement.

------ WARNING! ------

Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact the skin.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  7. Remove used oil filter elements (7). Discard filter elements (7).

Note: The oil filters are located in the left front wheel well. The oil may be trapped in the oil filter housing. In order to avoid possible burns, remove the oil filters when the oil filters are cool enough to touch with your bare hands.

  8. Clean the oil filter base. Make sure that all of the former gasket is removed.

  9. Apply a thin film of clean engine oil to the new oil filter seal.

  10. Install the oil filter element by hand. Tighten the filter element until the sealing surface contacts the filter base. Tighten the filter element by an additional 3/4 of a turn.

Note: Do NOT fill the oil filter elements with oil before installation.

Note: There are rotation index marks on each filter that are spaced 90 degrees or 1/4 of a turn away from each other. When you tighten the filters for an additional 3/4 of a turn, use the rotation index marks as a guide.

  11. Connect hose (8) to hose (1). Fill the crankcase with oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities" for the correct type of oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacities (Refill)" for the correct amount of oil.

  13. Connect hose (1) to the quick disconnect fitting.

  14. If you are unable to perform the above steps, the following steps are the recommended alternate method for changing the engine oil and filters.

    1. Park the machine on a hard, level surface. Engage the parking brake. The oil must be warm and the engine must be stopped.

    3. Remove the used oil filter elements and discard the filter elements.

Note: The filters are located in the left front wheel well. Oil may be trapped in the oil filter housing. In order to avoid possible burns, remove the oil filters when the oil filters are cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Drain the oil into a suitable container.

    4. Clean the filter housing base. Make sure that all of the former gasket is removed.

    5. Apply a thin film of clean engine oil to the new oil filter seal.

    6. Install the filter by hand. Tighten the filter element until the sealing surface contacts the filter base. Tighten the filter element by an additional 3/4 of a turn.

Note: There are rotation index marks on each filter that are spaced 90 degrees or 1/4 of a turn away from each other. When you tighten the filters for an additional 3/4 of a turn, use the rotation index marks as a guide.

    7. Remove oil filler cap (2). Fill the crankcase with oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities" for the type of oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacities (Refill)" for the amount of oil.

  15. Insert the disconnect key into the battery disconnect switch. Turn the battery disconnect switch to the ON position.

    1. Start the engine and operate the engine at low idle for five minutes. Inspect the engine oil filter for oil leaks. Make any necessary repairs.

    2. Maintain the oil level between the "ADD" mark and the "FULL" mark. These marks are on the "OPERATING RANGE" side of dipstick (1). Stop the engine.
