Feed Roller Arm Cylinder Opening Speed - Test and Adjust

Usage:

HH45 CFE
The following procedure is used to adjust the opening speed of the feed roller arm cylinders. Adjust the speed so the feed roller arms open smoothly without slamming against the stops.

The maximum speed of the oil flow to the feed roller arm cylinders is controlled by a stroke limiter screw. The amount of oil flow to the cylinders is controlled by limiting the movement of the valve spool with the stroke limiter screw.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from escaping fluid under pressure.

Escaping fluid under pressure, even a very small pin-hole size leak, can penetrate body tissue and cause serious injury and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury.

Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

    Locations of Toggle Switches

    (3) Toggle switch (Grapple CLOSE). (4) Toggle switch (Grapple OPEN).

  1. Press toggle switch (4). The feed roller arms will open. Measure the time that is required for the feed roller arms to open.

The speed must meet the following criteria. If the speed does not meet the criteria, perform Step 6 through Step 9 in order to adjust the speed. If the speed meets the criteria proceed to Step 11.

    • The measured speed should be between 1.0 second and 1.5 seconds.

    • The feed roller arms should not slam the stop at the end of travel. This could cause damage to the frame of the harvester head.

  1. Lower the harvester head to the ground. Turn the switch for the computer aided bucking system (CABS) to the OFF position. Press the operating mode switch in order to activate the Neutral mode. Stop the engine.

  1. To change the speed of opening, loosen the locknut on adjustment screw (6). Turn adjustment screw (6) in the counterclockwise direction in order to increase the speed of opening. Turn adjustment screw (6) in the clockwise direction in order to decrease the speed of opening. Tighten the locknut to a torque of 7.9 N·m (70 lb in).

  1. Start the engine. Press the operator mode switch in order to activate the work mode. Turn the engine speed dial until the engine is operating at 1300 rpm. Turn the switch for the computer aided bucking system (CABS) to the ON position. Raise the harvester head approximately 0.3 m (1 ft).

  1. Press toggle switch (4). The feed roller arms will open. Measure the time that is required for the feed roller arms to open. The feed roller arms should not slam the stop at the end of travel.

  1. Repeat Step 6 through Step 9 if the speed is not correct. Proceed to Step 11 if the speed is correct.

  1. Lower the harvester head to the ground. Turn the switch for the computer aided bucking system (CABS) to the OFF position. Press the operating mode switch in order to activate the Neutral mode. Stop the engine.
