Components of the transmission lubrication hydraulic filter (5) Bypass valve (6) Spring (7) Outlet passage (8) Base (9) Inlet passage (10) Element (11) Housing |
Oil from the transmission section of the hydraulic tank flows to the transmission gear pump. The transmission lubrication section of the pump sends oil to transmission lubrication hydraulic filter (3) .
Oil flows through inlet passage (9). The oil fills the space between the inside of housing (11) and element (10). During normal operation, the oil flows through element (10) and out outlet passage (7). The oil then combines with oil from the transmission hydraulic control. This oil is sent to the transmission oil cooler. The oil goes from the transmission oil cooler to the transmission and transfer gears for lubrication. Element (10) stops any debris that is in the oil.
If filter element (10) becomes full of debris, the restriction to the flow of oil causes a pressure increase inside the filter. The pressure oil causes bypass valve (5) to move against the force of spring (6) .
The oil then flows past the open bypass valve and to the transmission lubrication system. When the oil does not flow through the filter element, the debris in the oil will cause damage to other components in the transmission system.

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
Use correct maintenance in order to make sure that element (10) does not become full of debris. If element (10) is full of debris, the flow of clean oil to the transmission lubrication system is stopped.
