Description of Change: An improved center drive shaft is now available. The new center drive shaft has the following improvements: stronger spline, larger universal joints and manual spline lubrication.
Adaptable To: The new 9EP6865 Center Drive Shaft is effective with R1600 (PIN: 9EW874-UP). The new 9EP6865 Center Drive Shaft is adaptable to R1600 (PIN: 9EW1-873) by using the following procedure.

Procedure
- Remove the center drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR4622 (9EP0562), "R1600 L.H.D. Power Train", "Remove and Install Drive Shaft".
Note: Discard spacers from each end of the drive shaft, if equipped.
- Remove the yoke assemblies and install a new 9EP6868 Yoke (1) and a new 9EP6869 Yoke (5). Refer to Illustrations 1 and 2 for the correct positions in order to install 9EP6868 Yoke (1) and 9EP6869 Yoke (5). For the correct torque value for the bolt, refer to Specifications, RENR4620 (9EP0559), "R1600 L.H.D. Power Train", "Drive Shaft Group".

- Install 9EP6865 Slip Joint Group (3) and 189-6123 Bolt (2). Refer to Illustration 1 for the correct installation. Refer to Specifications, RENR4620 (9EP0559), "R1600 L.H.D. Power Train", "Drive Shaft Group" for the correct alignment and torque values.
- Install a new 9EP7606 Guard (4) .
- Lubricate the drive shaft assembly. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7322 (9EP0575), "R1600 L.H.D.", "Drive Shaft Universal Joints, Splines, and Bearings".
- Use Table 2 with Illustration 3.
