Fuel System Primary Filter - Replace

Usage:

TH103 3PN

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from a fire.

Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire.

Clean up all leaked or spilled fuel. Do not smoke while working on the fuel system.

Turn the disconnect switch OFF or disconnect the battery when changing fuel filters.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

NOTICE

The primary fuel filter incorporates a fuel/water separator. The separator must be drained before operating the engine if water is visible in up to 1/2 of the transparent portion of the separator. If water is above this level the filter must be replaced. Engine damage may result from excessive water in the fuel system.

The primary fuel filter is located on the right side of the engine.

  1. Park the machine on level ground. Fully retract and fully lower the boom. Move the transmission control to the NEUTRAL position and ensure that the parking brake is engaged. Shut off the engine.

  2. Open the engine enclosure.

  3. Clean the outside of the primary fuel filter.

  4. Loosen drain valve (1) on the bottom of the water collection bowl and drain the fluid into a suitable container. Tighten the valve. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System Water Separator-Drain".

  5. Unscrew nut (2) and remove priming pump (3) from the top of the primary fuel filter.

  6. Internally, remove the fuel filter plug from the primary fuel filter. Remove the plug by inserting a small screwdriver under the plug and lifting the plug from the filter housing. The plug is not a tight fit in the filter housing. Remove any sediment from the sediment chamber.

  7. Reinstall the fuel filter plug. Reinstall priming pump (3) onto the primary filter. Secure the pump to the filter by tightening nut (2).

  8. Unscrew retaining ring (4). Remove filter element (5) from filter base (6). Unscrew retaining ring (7) in order to remove water collection bowl (8).

  9. Install water collection bowl (8) and retaining ring (7) onto the new filter element. Hand tighten retaining ring (7). Do not overtighten the retaining ring.

Note: An O-ring is installed between retaining ring (7) and filter element (5).

  10. Clean the gasket sealing surface on filter base assembly (6).

  11. Lubricate the seals on the replacement filter element with clean diesel fuel.

  12. Install the new filter element and hand tighten the retaining ring. Do not overtighten the retaining ring.

  13. Purge the air from the fuel system. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System - Prime" for further instructions.

Note: The secondary fuel filter should be changed when the primary fuel filter is changed. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System Secondary Filter - Replace" for further instructions.

Note: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU6250, "Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations" for more detailed lubricant information.

  14. Start the engine and check for leaks.
