Installation of the 172-9321 Metering Pump for the Steering System{4312}

Usage:

D250E II 4PS
Articulated Truck:
D250E Series II (PIN: 4PS1-458)
D300E Series II (PIN: 5KS1-401)

Introduction

This Special Instruction provides detailed instructions on the installation of the new improved 172-9321 Metering Pump which is a direct replacement for the former 160-8008 Metering Pump .

The 160-8008 Metering Pump required external check valves for protecting system components from cavitation. The new 172-9321 Metering Pump has check valves which have been installed within the unit. The external check valves need to be removed. This will prevent interactions between the two sets of check valves.

Remove the following components

Removal Procedure

------ WARNING! ------

At operating temperature, the hydraulic tank is hot and under pressure.

Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.

Remove the filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Remove the filler cap slowly in order to relieve pressure.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Note: Turn off the engine. Apply the foot brake several times in order to relieve the pressure in the brake system. Turn the steering wheel in order to relieve the pressure in the metering pump. Remove the hydraulic filler cap slowly in order to relieve the pressure in the hydraulic tank.

  1. Pull the hood release lever in the cab. Open the engine hood and engage the hood latch.

  1. Put identification marks on all lines, hoses, wires and tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, hoses and tubes. This helps prevent fluid loss and contamination of the oil system.
