Steering Cylinder - Install

Usage:

D400E II 8PS

Installation Procedure

  1. Clean all parts and inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar parts for replacement.

  2. Lubricate O-ring seals with an appropriate lubricant.

  3. Install two O-rings (12) and two face seals (11) to each end of steering cylinder (2).

  4. Install appropriate nylon lifting straps and a hoist to steering cylinder (2).

  5. Place steering cylinder (2) into position behind the wheel. The weight of the steering cylinder is 53 kg (117 lb). Install the tapered pin, bolt (9), and washers (10), that secure the steering cylinder to the frame. Tighten the bolt to a torque of 215 ± 10 N·m (159 ± 7 lb ft).

  6. Pivot the steering cylinder toward the machine. Install tapered pin (8), bolt (6), and washers (7) that secure the steering cylinder to the frame. Tighten the bolt to a torque of 215 ± 10 N·m (159 ± 7 lb ft).

  7. Use a hammer in order to strike the large end of the tapered pins. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 215 ± 10 N·m (159 ± 7 lb ft).

  8. Repeat Step 7 until the bolt remains at the specified torque.

  9. Install line (5) at the front suspension arm.

  10. Install the O-ring to line (3). Install the line. If the machine is so equipped, install line (4).

  11. Install the O-ring and line (1) to steering cylinder (2).

  12. Lubricate the steering cylinders. Use the grease fitting on the tapered pin at the rear of the steering cylinder and the grease fittings at the bulkhead adapter. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7064, "Steering Cylinder Bearings - Lubricate" for the correct procedure.

End By:

  1. Install the fender. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fender - Remove and Install".
