  1. Install seal ring (5) in piston (4) .

    Illustration 3g00503431

  1. Put piston (4) in position on retainer (2) .

  1. Install one of two springs (8), ring (7), remaining spring (8), and ring (6) on retainer (2). Orient the springs and the rings, as shown. See Illustration 3.

Note: A disc assembly has friction material on both sides. A plate is a smooth steel plate which does not have friction material on either side. Put clean oil on all disc assemblies and plates before assembly.

  1. Turn over the brake housing. Put steering clutch hub (11) in position in order to align the discs. Install six discs (12) and the five plates in the housing. Alternate installation of the discs and the plates. Start with a disc and end with a disc.

  1. Put retainer (14) in position on the brake housing.

Note: Be sure that the disc assemblies do not get between retainer (14) and the brake housing when the bolts are tightened.

  1. Install ten bolts (13) and the washers evenly. Install the bolts snugly but do not tighten the bolts. Bolts (13) put a spring under compression. Bolts (13) will be tightened in Step 28 after the brake discs are aligned with the splines in the steering clutch housing in Step 26.

  1. Remove steering clutch hub (11) from the brake housing.

  1. Be sure that the smooth side of plate (16) is toward the splines on hub assembly (15). Use Tooling (B) and a press to install plate (16) on hub assembly (15) .

  1. Install seal ring (17) on plate (16) .

    NOTICE

New seal rings must be preloaded before installation. Preloading the seal rings helps to prevent breakage and damage to the seal rings. Use the following method to correctly preload the seal rings:

Place your hands on each end of the seal ring and pull until one end is several inches past the other end. Pull the seal ring and/or wind the seal ring until the ends of the seal ring almost make contact. See Illustration 10. Use care to keep the seal ring shaped in a circle. This will make an even bend all the way around the ring. This bend is also called the ring "set". When the seal ring is properly installed in the seal ring groove the ends of the seal will touch each other lightly.

Do not use this method to preload a used seal ring or a cast iron seal ring. This method will cause a used seal ring or a cast iron seal ring to break.

The wrong method of preloading the seal ring is shown in Illustration 11. Do not bend the seal ring in this manner. This method does not make an even bend all the way around the ring.

  1. Install three seal rings (19) on the hub assembly.

  1. Install ring (20) in steering clutch housing (21) .

    Illustration 13g00503467

  1. Use Tooling (A) and a hoist to put housing (21) on wood blocks, as shown. See Illustration 13. Put hub assembly (15) in position in housing (21) .

  1. Install Tooling (D) on piston (23). Put piston (23) in position in housing (21) .

    Illustration 16g00503470

  1. Heat retainer (24) to maximum temperature of 135°C (275°F). Install bearing (25) in retainer (24) .

  1. Install retainer (24) and bearing (25) as a unit on hub assembly (15) .

  1. Use Tooling (C) and install retaining ring (26) .

    Illustration 17g00503471

  1. Put hub (11) in position. Install the four bolts and washers that hold the hub in place.

  1. Install six discs (27) and the five plates in the housing. Alternate installation of the discs and plates. Start with a disc and end with a disc.

    Illustration 18g00503473

  1. Put retainer (28) in position and install the ten bolts and the washers that fasten the retainer to the housing.

    Illustration 20g00503475

  1. Install Tooling (A) to the brake housing and attach a hoist. Align the brake discs with the splines on the steering clutch housing. Put brake (29) in position on steering clutch (30). Be sure that the seal rings are correctly positioned so that the rings do not hang up when the groups are assembled.

  1. Put plate (31) in position and install the four bolts and washers.
