------ WARNING! ------

Sudden movement or accidental starting of the machine can cause personal injury or death to persons on or near the machine.

To prevent personal injury or death, perform the following:

Park the machine on a smooth, level surface.

Lower the bucket and/or attachments to the ground and engage the parking brake.

Stop the engine and remove the key.

Block the wheels and install the steering frame lock.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

This test will help to determine whether the tilt cylinder is causing a drift problem. When the oil port at one end of the tilt cylinder is blocked, the tilt cylinder should not move during a drift test. If the tilt cylinder moves, there is internal leakage in the tilt cylinder.

  1. Move the transmission direction control switch to the NEUTRAL position.

  1. Engage the parking brake.

  1. Move the steering frame lock to the locked position.

  1. Start the engine. Warm the hydraulic oil to normal operating temperature of 54° to 82°C (129° to 180°F).

  1. Raise the bucket off the ground by approximately 1 m (3.3 ft). Place a support block under the bucket. Lower the bucket onto the support block.

  1. Stop the engine.

  1. When the engine has stopped, move the lift control lever and the tilt control lever in order to relieve the pressure in the hydraulic system.

  1. Push in the plunger for the hydraulic tank breaker relief valve in order to relieve the pressure in the hydraulic oil tank. Push down on the plunger until all pressure is released from the hydraulic oil tank.

    Hose Assemblies (Head End)

  1. Remove one hose assembly from the tube assembly. Install a 6V-9512 Face Seal Plug and a 5K-9090 O-Ring Seal in the hose that connects to the head end of the lift cylinder. Install a 6V-9833 Flared Cap on the tube assembly.

  1. Start the engine. Run the engine at low idle.

  1. Raise the bucket. Remove the support block from the bucket.

  1. Place the lift control lever in the HOLD position.

  1. Place the tilt lever in the DUMP position. Check the distance of rod movement. For a new cylinder, the maximum rod movement in one minute should not exceed 3.0 mm (.12 inch).

  1. Start the engine. Tilt the bucket until the bucket is parallel to the ground.

  1. Lower the bucket on the support block. Make sure that the weight of the bucket is on the support block.

  1. Stop the engine and release the hydraulic system pressure.

  1. Remove the plug from the hose connection and the cap from the manifold. Reconnect the hose assembly.

  1. Repeat Steps 9 through 19 for the other tilt cylinder.
