Torque Converter and Retarder - Separate

Separation Procedure

Start By:

  1. Remove the torque converter and retarder. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Torque Converter and Retarder - Remove". The information is in this manual.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Attach Tooling (A) , a nylon lifting strap and a hoist to retarder hydraulic control valve (5) .

  1. Remove three bolts (4) that secure retarder hydraulic control valve (5) to the retarder. Remove hydraulic control valve (5) from the retarder.

  1. Remove bolt (3) , spacer (2) and spider (1) from the retarder.

  1. Apply marks to stator (7) and the retarder housing for assembly purposes. Remove bolts (6) that secure stator (7) to the retarder housing.

  1. Use two 3/8 " - 16 NC forcing bolts (8) in order to separate stator (7) from the retarder housing. Remove stator (7) from the retarder housing.

  1. Attach two eyebolts (9) to rotor (10) . Use a hoist in order to remove rotor (10) from retarder housing (11) .

  1. Apply marks to retarder housing (11) and torque converter (14) for assembly purposes. Attach Tooling (B) , a nylon lifting strap and a hoist to retarder housing (11) . Remove bolts (13) that secure retarder housing (11) to torque converter (14) .

  1. Use two 3/8 " - 16 NC forcing bolts (12) in order to separate retarder housing (11) from torque converter (14) . Remove retarder housing (11) from torque converter (14) . The weight of retarder housing (11) is 42 kg (93 lb) .

  1. Remove O-ring seal (15) from torque converter (14) .

  1. Remove O-ring seal (16) from retarder housing (11) .
