Caterpillar Monitoring System is an input and an output of the ECM. These two electronic controls communicate back and forth on the CAT data link.

The Caterpillar Monitoring System receives information from the ECM. The following information is shown on the monitor:

  • The status of the current gear is shown on the display area (5) .

  • The speed of the machine is shown on the speedometer/tachometer module (1).

  • The angle of articulation is shown on the gauge cluster module (3).

  • The status of the parking brake is shown on one of the alert indicators (4).

  • The angle of the ripper is shown on the display area (5).

  • The diagnostic service codes are shown on the display area (5).

The Caterpillar Monitoring System sends information about the harness code to the transmission ECM. The harness code tells the transmission ECM the machine sales model. The Caterpillar Monitoring System also sends operating instructions to the transmission ECM. The operating instruction commands the transmission ECM to change operating modes. The modes that are available are in the following table. The operating instructions also tell the transmission ECM to clear service codes that are stored in the memory of the transmission ECM.

The 4C-8195 Service Tool enables personnel to access information that is related to service. The service tool attaches to the 4 pin connector which is located behind a plate directly below the Caterpillar Monitoring System.

In order to access mode "6" for the transmission ECM, perform the following steps:

  1. Attach the service tool to the 4 pin connector below the Caterpillar Monitoring System.

    Illustration 4g00484974

    Display Area (Mode 6)

  1. Press up both the service "SCROLL" and "CLEAR" switches on the service tool. The Caterpillar Monitoring System will scroll to different display modes in the display area (2). Display mode "6" is used by the transmission ECM. The two switches should be held until the Caterpillar Monitoring System display area shows "-6-".

  1. When the Caterpillar Monitoring System gets to display mode "6", the status of the service switches are sent to the transmission ECM: "SET", "CLEAR" and operator switches. The ECM tells the Caterpillar Monitoring System the text to display.

  1. Because several functions must be done in one Caterpillar Monitoring System display mode, there are several sub-modes. Different information is displayed in the different sub-modes. Holding down on the SET switch for 0.5 seconds will cause the current sub-mode to be displayed. If the SET switch is held down for 2.0 seconds, then the sub-modes will change to the next sub-mode. For example, in order to change to sub-mode "-6.3-", follow this sequence: Hold down the "SET" switch. The display area would show "-6.1-" for 2.0 seconds. Next "-6.2-" would be displayed for 2.0 seconds. Then, the display area would show "-6.3-". When the service person releases the "SET" switch, the display would be in sub-mode 3.
