517 Track-Type Skidder Caterpillar

Track Adjustment - Adjust

Usage:

517 5WW

------ WARNING! ------

Grease is under high pressure.

Grease coming out of the relief valve under pressure can penetrate the body causing injury or death.

Do not watch the relief valve to see if grease is escaping. Watch the track or track adjustment cylinder to see if the track is being loosened.

Loosen the relief valve only one turn.

Before you measure the sag in the track, move the machine forward for at least two lengths of the machine. Allow the machine to stop without the use of the service brakes. After stopping, move forward slightly in order to ensure that no excess slack remains in the track between the rear idler and the sprocket.

To measure the sag in the track, stretch a string over the grousers between the final drive sprocket and the front idler. Measure the sag in the track at the point that gives the maximum measurement.

Correct adjustment gives a dimension (2) of 75 ± 10 mm (2.9 ± .4 inch).

NOTICE

Do not attempt to tighten track when dimension (1) is 105 mm (4.13 inch) or more.

Contact you Caterpillar dealer for track service or instructions.

Loose Track Adjustment

  1. Remove the cover plate for access to the track adjustment valve.

  1. Add multipurpose grease (MPGM) through track adjustment valve (4). Add the MPGM until dimension (2) is correct.

  1. Operate the machine back and forth in order to equalize the pressure. Allow the machine to coast to a complete stop. Do not use the brakes.

  1. Remeasure dimensions (2) .

  1. Make additional adjustments, if necessary.

  1. Install the access cover.

  1. Repeat the procedure on the other track, if necessary.

Tight Track Adjustment

  1. Loosen relief valve (3) by one turn only. Allow the grease to escape.

  1. Close the relief valve. Tighten the relief valve to a torque of 35 ± 7 N·m (25 ± 5 lb ft).

  1. Add MPGM through track adjustment valve (4). Add grease until dimension (2) is correct.

  1. Install the access cover.

  1. Repeat the procedure on the other track, if necessary.

Bolt Torque for Track Shoes

The torque requirement for track shoe bolts for both standard and split master links is 400 ± 70 N·m (300 ± 50 lb ft). Tighten the bolts to the specified torque and then turn the bolts by an additional 120 degrees (1/3 turn).
