Caterpillar Monitoring System Schematic

CID 0562 FMI 09 service code is recorded when the power train electronic control module (ECM) cannot communicate with the Caterpillar Monitoring System via the CAT Data Link. The update rate from the power train ECM is not correct. Check to see whether fault CID 0248 FMI 02 exists. If this fault is present, correct this fault first. Refer to System Operation, Testing and Adjusting, SENR1394, "Caterpillar Monitoring System", "CID 0248 FMI 02 CAT Data Link Incorrect - Test" for more information on correcting this fault.

For all of the electronic control modules, the CAT Data Link is an input and an output. The CAT Data Link allows communications between all of the electronic control modules and the service tools. The CAT Data Link is not a visible component. It consists of internal control circuits and the connecting harness wiring.

  1. Check the compatibility of the software.

    1. For the correct software part numbers, refer to the "Electronics Groups" section in the Parts Book for the machine.

Expected Result: The software is compatible.

      Results:

      • OK - The software is compatible. Proceed to Step 2.

      • NOT OK - The software is not compatible. Install the correct software. If any electronic control modules have been replaced, ensure that the correct part number was used. If conditions are not resolved, proceed to Step 2.

  1. Check the +battery circuit at the power train ECM connectors.

    1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the OFF position.

    1. Disconnect connector J1 from the power train ECM.

    1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

    1. At connector J1, measure the voltage from contact 1 or from contact 6 (wire 126-PK) to contact 2 or to contact 5 (wire A273-BK).

Expected Result: The voltage should measure 18 to 35 DCV.

      Results:

      • OK - The power train ECM is receiving the correct power. Proceed to Step 3.

      • NOT OK - The power train ECM is not receiving the correct power. Make sure that there is a proper ground. If ground is OK, repair the power circuit. Also check the circuit breakers. The power circuit connector contact J1-1 and J1-6 (wire 126-PK) to the power train ECM in the machine harness may be faulty. Repair the power circuit to the power train ECM. Reconnect connector J1 to the power train ECM. Check whether CID 0562 FMI 09 is still active. If the fault remains active, go to Step 3. If the fault is not active, STOP.

  1. Check the machine harness connections.

    1. The key start switch and the disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.

    1. Inspect the machine harness connectors that pertain to the CAT Data Link circuits. Ensure that the connector contacts are clean. Also, ensure that the connectors are tight. If necessary, repair the machine harness connectors or replace the machine harness connectors.

    1. Reconnect all the harness connectors. Check whether CID 0562 FMI 09 is still active.

Expected Result: The CID 0562 FMI 09 service code is not active.

      Results:

      • OK - The CID 0562 FMI 09 service code is not active. Resume normal machine operation. STOP.

      • NOT OK - The CID 0562 FMI 09 service code is present. Proceed to Step 4.

  1. Check the CAT Data Link circuit for a short to ground.

    1. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.

    1. Disconnect the machine harnesses from all of the electronic control modules.

    1. At the machine harness connector for the power train ECM, measure the resistance between CAT Data Link circuits (connector contacts J1-3 and J1-9) to all possible sources of ground. The following contacts are possible sources of ground: J1-2, J1-5, J1-7, J1-15, J1-16, J2-3 and frame ground.

Expected Result: The resistance should be greater than 5000 Ohms for each measurement.

      Results:

      • OK - The machine harness is correct. Proceed to Step 5.

      • NOT OK - There is a short in the machine harness. The short is between the circuit with the resistance that is less than 5000 Ohms and contact J1-3 (wire 945-BR) or contact J1-9 (944-OR). Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness. Check whether CID 0562 FMI 09 is still active. If the fault remains active, go to Step 5. If the fault is not active, STOP.

  1. Check for a CAT Data Link circuit that is short to positive voltage.

    1. The disconnect switch and the key start switch remain in the OFF position.

    1. All of the electronic control modules remain disconnected from the machine harness.

    1. At the machine harness connector for the power train ECM, measure the resistance between the CAT Data Link circuits (connector contacts J1-3 and J1-9) and all possible sources of positive voltage. The following contacts are possible sources of positive voltage: J1-1, J1-6, J1-8, J1-11, J1-13, J1-14, J1-17, J1-19, J1-20, J1-40, J2-1, J2-2, J2-4, J2-5, J2-7, J2-8, J2-14, J2-19, J2-35 and J2-37.

Expected Result: The resistance should be more than 5000 Ohms for each measurement.

      Results:

      • OK - The machine harness is correct. Proceed to Step 6.

      • NOT OK - There is a short in the machine harness. The short is between the circuit with the resistance that is less than 5000 Ohms and connector contact J1-3 (wire 945-BR) or connector contact J1-9 (944-OR). Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness. Check whether CID 0562 FMI 09 is still active. If the fault remains active, go to Step 6. If the fault is not active, STOP.

  1. Check the CAT Data Link for an open circuit.

    1. The disconnect switch remains OFF.

    1. All of the electronic control modules remain disconnected from the machine harness.

    1. At the power train ECM, measure the resistance from connector contact J1-3 (wire 945-BR) to the corresponding contacts of all of the other electronic control modules. The other ECM contacts include: Caterpillar Monitoring System contact 14 (wire 945-BR), Implement ECM contact J1-3 (wire 945-BR) and Wheel Loader Payload Control System contact 15 (wire 945-BR), if equipped.

    1. At the power train ECM, measure the resistance from connector contact J1-9 (wire 944-OR) to the corresponding contacts of all of the other electronic control modules. The other ECM contacts include: Caterpillar Monitoring System contact 5 (wire 944-OR), Implement ECM contact J1-9 (wire 944-OR) and Wheel Loader Payload Control System contact 19 (wire 944-OR), if equipped.

Expected Result: There should be less than 5 Ohms of resistance for each measurement.

      Results:

      • OK - The CAT Data Link circuit in the machine harness is correct. It is unlikely that the Caterpillar Monitoring System ECM is faulty. Exit this procedure and perform CID 0562 FMI 09 again. If the cause of the fault is not found, go to Step 7.

      • NOT OK - The CAT Data Link circuit connector (wire 945-BR or wire 944-OR) is open in the machine harness. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness. Check whether CID 0562 FMI 09 is still active. If the fault remains active, go to Step 7. If the fault is not active, STOP.

  1. Repair the power train ECM or replace the power train ECM.

    1. The power train ECM must be replaced in a specific manner. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (Power Train) - Replace" for more information on replacing the power train ECM.

Expected Result: The original condition does not exist.

      Results:

      • OK - The original condition does not exist. STOP.

      • NOT OK - The original condition still exists. It is unlikely that the Caterpillar Monitoring System has failed. Exit this procedure and perform CID 0562 FMI 09 again. If the cause of the fault is not found, replace the Caterpillar Monitoring System. Refer to System Operation, Testing and Adjusting, SENR1394, "Caterpillar Monitoring System", "Module - Replace" for more information on replacing the Caterpillar Monitoring System.
