Starting the Engine

Usage:

784B 5RK

------ WARNING! ------

Diesel engine exhaust contains products of combustion which may be harmful to your health.

Always start and operate the engine in a well ventilated area and, if in an enclosed area, vent the exhaust to the outside.

  1. Move the transmission direction and speed control lever (1) to the NEUTRAL position. Engage parking brake (2) .

  1. Observe the body down indicator. The dump body should be down and the hoist control should be in the FLOAT position.

  1. Make sure that no one is on the machine, underneath the machine, or around the machine. Make sure that there are no personnel in the area.

  1. Sound the horn.

    NOTICE

Inject starting aid (ether), only while cranking the engine, or after initial start-up, until the engine is running smoothly.

Use sparingly, excessive ether without cranking can cause piston and ring damage.

Wait approximately two seconds before injecting again.

Use ether for cold starting purposes only.

After every 30 seconds of engine cranking, allow two minutes for starting motor to cool before cranking again.

Turbocharger (if equipped) damage can result, if the engine rpm is not kept low until the engine oil light/gauge verifies the oil pressure is sufficient.

  1. Position the ether starting aid switch in the AUTOMATIC position. Turn the engine start switch to the START position. When the starting motor is engaged and the temperatures of the engine coolant and of the oil are below 10°C (50°F), the ether will be injected into the engine.

  1. Release the engine start switch when the engine starts.

  1. If the engine does not continue to operate easily, move the ether starting aid switch to the MANUAL position. Hold the switch in the MANUAL position until the engine runs easily and/or the white exhaust smoke stops. The system has an orifice in order to prevent injecting to much ether. The ether will be injected if the following conditions exist:

    • The switch is held in the MANUAL position.

    • The engine speed is between 15 RPM to 2000 RPM.

    • The coolant temperature is below 10°C (50°F) .

For starting below -18°C (0°F), use of additional cold weather starting aids is recommended. A coolant heater, a fuel heater or an extra battery capacity may be required.

At temperatures below -23°C (-10°F), consult your Caterpillar dealer or refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU5898, "Cold Weather Recommendations".
