SUBJECT: Axle Half Shaft Lip Seals May Leak
PROBLEM:
There have been reports of the 199-0707 Seal and the 198-7822 Seal for the axle half shaft leaking. Some reports indicate that a cut is on the lip seal. Other reports indicate that the spring for the seal is missing. There have also been reports of the new seals leaking after they have been installed.
SOLUTION:
The problem is under investigation. Until a permanent solution has been verified, use the following assembly tips in order to decrease the chance of leakage between the seals to the axle half shaft.
- Apply a small amount of 4C-9613 Silicone Sealant to the outside diameter of the both seals. The silicone sealant should prevent leakage around the outside diameter of the seals. Be careful not to get any sealant on the lip of the seal at installation.
- Use the correct size of seal driver in order to keep the seals (1) and (2) square during installation. After the seals are installed, check the seals to make sure that the springs inside the seals are still in place.
- Use extreme care when you install the half shaft through inner seal (2) in order to prevent the half shaft from damaging the seal.
- Before you install knuckle (3) that contains the outer seal (1), wrap spline (4) at the end of the half shaft with tape in order to avoid damage to the lip seal when the seal passes over half shaft. Remove the tape after you install the knuckle.
