Usage:
The new 6V4839 Cap, when installed with 15600 Snap Ring, will prevent the possible lock-up of the 5P3508 Torque Multiplier. The new 6V4839 Cap has a counterbore for the location of the 15600 Snap Ring and permits the removal of 6V1366 Retaining Ring, which was the cause of any lock-up of the 5P3508 Torque Multiplier. For installation of the cap and snap ring, see the instructions that follow.
NOTE: Torque multipliers with a "C" serial number prefix do not need modification.
1 Push three spring pins (1) in through case (2). Remove cover (3), the lip seal and the bearing from the case. Remove thrust race (4), the thrust bearing and output gear assembly (5).
2 Remove input gear assembly (6) and the thrust race. Turn case (2) and remove retaining ring (7). Remove input shaft assembly (8). Retaining ring (7) will not be used again.
3 Retaining ring (7) can be either a 6V1366 Retaining Ring (A) or a round retaining ring (B).
4 A view of the parts removed from the case.
5 Push six pins (9) from cap (10) of the input gear assembly. Use tool (C) or similar tooling; see page 8. Cap (10) does not have a counterbore as shown in new 6V4839 Cap (11).
6 Remove 5P7337 Retaining Ring (12) from input shaft assembly (8). Remove 5P4736 Positioner Ring (13). Remove four pawls (14).
NOTE: A steel ball and spring, under compression, will come out when positioner ring (13) is removed.
7 Put thrust race (15) in position on the input shaft. Put 6V4839 Cap (11) in position with the counterbore away from the thrust race, as shown. Install 15600 Snap Ring (16) in position.
8 Put the planet gears on the input assembly into alignment with the teeth on the input shaft assembly. Be sure a thrust race is in position on each side of the planet gears. Push pins (9) into cap (11); use tool (D), see page 8, to hold the assembly and keep the ends of the pins even with cap (11). The pins should be even with or just below the surfaces of cap (11) and pinion (17). The planet gears must turn freely after assembly.
9 A view of assembled input gear and shaft assembly.
10 Install pawls (14) in input gear and shaft assembly (18). Put 5P960 Multipurpose Type Grease on all parts that are installed inside the case. Put input gear and shaft assembly (18) in position in case (2). Use pliers (19), or similar tool, to put the pawls into alignment with the teeth in the case. Install thrust race (20) and output gear assembly (5) in the case. Install thrust bearing (21) and thrust race (4). Install the bearing, lip seal and cover (3). Put spring pins (1) in position in the case and cover.
NOTE: Some torque multiplier wrenches may have two races (20).
11 Put spring (22) and ball (23) in hole (E) of positioner ring (13). Put positioner ring (13) in place and install retaining ring (12).
