Description of Change: A new 173-3901 Hinge can be installed to the cab door, which gives a greater resistance to sagging and reduces striker plate fatigue. The new hinge is a direct replacement for the existing hinge. The new arrangement is effective with D25D (1HK756-Up) and D30D (3AJ448-Up).
Adaptable To: The new 173-3901 Hinge is adaptable to D25D (1HK1-755) and D30D (3AJ1-447) Articulated Trucks. The new 173-3901 Hinge is also adaptable to first production of D40D, D350D, D400D, D350E and D400E Articulated Trucks.
Chart 1 lists the new parts required to make the change.
Installation Procedure
Illustration 1.
Cab Door Mounting Arrangement.
1. With cab door (3) in the fully open position, disconnect gas spring (4) from cab door (3), and retain the hardware. Do not disconnect gas spring (4) from cab frame (5), shown in Illustration 1.
2. Disconnect strap (6) from cab door (3) and retain the two mounting bolts and two washers. Do not disconnect strap (6) from cab frame (5).
3. Support cab door (3) before removing existing bolts (8). Remove cab door (3), and discard existing hinge (7) and fourteen existing bolts (8).
Illustration 2.
Install Hinge and Cab Door.
4. Install 173-3901 Hinge (1) to cab door (3) using seven 108-4311 Countersunk Bolts (2), shown in Illustration 2.
5. Assemble cab door (3) to cab frame (5) using seven 108-4311 Countersunk Bolts (2).
6. Connect gas spring (4) to cab door (3), using the hardware retained in Step 1.
7. Connect strap (6) to cab door (3) using the two mounting bolts and two washers retained in Step 2.
Illustration 3.
Adjustment of the Cab Door and Striker Assembly.
8. Refer to Illustration 3, and adjust the cab door using the following procedure.
9. Close cab door (3) and locate striker assembly (9), so it is centered vertically in latch jaws (14). Ensure striker assembly (9) engages latch jaws (14) smoothly, and does not guide the cab door up or down.
10. Check for interference between striker assembly (9) and latch jaws (14), or latch case (15).
11. Adjust the position of striker assembly (9) by removing or adding shims (12).
12. Check for both the primary and secondary latched positions. The primary latched position is fully closed and fully latched. The secondary latched position is when the cab door is latched but the lock jaws are not in the primary latched position.
The primary latched position may not be achieved due to a high seal pressure or the position of striker assembly (9). Loosen nut (10) on striker plate (13) and adjust the position of striker assembly (9) until the primary latched position is achieved. Tighten nut (10) to the correct torque.
NOTE: Hinge adjustment may also be required to achieve the primary latched position, or the correct door seal pressure.
13. Check that the cab door is fully closed against the door seal with the latch in the primary latched position, not the secondary latched position.
