Description of Change: Improved Duo-Cone seals are now in production. The seal face thickness and tolerance was changed. The resulting reduction in load to the face will improve service life in high speed applications, and will improve break-in reliability.
Adaptable To: The 1M-8747 Seal Group replaces the 8E-8338 Seal Group and is effective with Challenger 35 (8RD71, ADK322), Challenger 45 (ABF113, 3BK359), Challenger 55 (6NN133, AEN380), Challenger 65E (6GS473), Challenger 75E (6HS457), Challenger 85E (6JS501), and Challenger 95E (6KS635). The improved seals are retrofittable to all earlier Rowcrop Challengers, C, D, and E series Challenger Tillage Tractors, and any other Tillage Tractor which has been upgraded to the sealed undercarriage system.
NOTE: Some of the former 8E-8338 Seal Groups also were produced with this change. Parts stock may be checked by using the dimensional data in the diagram below. Measure the face thickness at 3 pad locations (located on the back side of the seal face). The thickness should be 2.2 to 3.2 mm (.09 to .13 inch) for the new 1M-8747 Seal Group (most are near 3.1 mm), and the thickness of the former seal was 2.5 to 3.9 mm (.10 to .15 inch) (most are near 3.8 mm). If a face thickness of more than 3.2 mm (.13 inch) is found, the seal group should not be used in Challenger midwheels. However, the seal group may be used in other applications which are at a lower rotational speed.
