Description of Change: A new procedure for installing the boom cable is now available. This procedure will help to clarify the proper routing for the boom cable. Proper cable routing is important to ensure proper machine function and prolonged life of the wire rope cable.
Adaptable To: The new boom cable installation procedure is adaptable to all 572R Pipelayers by following the procedure below. This procedure should replace the existing procedure described in the.

Do not use a wire rope cable that is kinked, frayed or has worn spots.
Wear gloves when handling the wire rope cable.

Use 6 X 25 filler wire, right regular lay, independent wire rope core, pre-formed, improved plow steel-type cables. The wire cables should have a minimal breaking strength of 26672 kg (58800 lb).

1. Unroll the new boom winch cable from the spool.
NOTE: Weld the ends of the boom winch cable in order to prevent fraying.

Unroll all of the boom winch cable from the spool. Lay the cable on a flat surface. Never lift the cable off the spool in coils.

2. Install the boom winch cable in the drum for the boom. Insert the end of the cable downward through the slot in the drum. Form a loop and insert the cable end upward through the slot. Insert the wedge into the loop in the cable. Pull the cable in order to seat the wedge and cable in the pocket.
3. Wind one half of the boom winch cable on the drum. Wind the cable evenly across the drum.
4. Install the boom winch cable in the upper block over sheave assembly (1).
NOTE: Install boom winch cable over sheave assembly (1) from the front of the machine toward the rear of the machine.
5. Install the cable under sheave assembly (2) in the lower block.
6. Install the cable over sheave assembly (3) in the upper sheave block.
8. Insert the boom winch cable into the pocket and around wedge (4). Tap wedge (4) and the cable into the pocket with a mallet.
9. Insert the end of the boom winch cable through clamp (5). Tighten the setscrew in the clamp to a torque of 45 ± 7 N·m (33 ± 5 lb ft).
10. Raise the boom.
