New Hook Cable Installation Procedure Clarifies Cable Routing {5417}

Description of Change: A new procedure for installing the hook cable is now available. This procedure will help to clarify the proper routing for the hook cable. Proper cable routing is important to ensure proper machine function and prolonged life of the wire rope cable.

Adaptable To: The new hook cable installation procedure is adaptable to all 583R Pipelayers by following the procedure below. This procedure should replace the existing procedure described in the.

Do not use a wire rope cable that is kinked, frayed or has worn spots.

Wear gloves when handling the wire rope cable.

NOTICE

Use 6 X 25 filler wire, right regular lay, independent wire rope core, pre-formed, improved plow steel-type cables. The wire cables should have a minimal breaking strength of 26672 kg (58800 lb).


1. Unroll the new hook winch cable from the spool.

NOTE: Weld the ends of the hook winch cable in order to prevent fraying.


NOTICE

Unroll all of the hook winch cable from the spool. Lay the cable on a flat surface. Never lift the cable off the spool in coils.


2. Install the ferrule for the hook winch cable to the load drum.

3. Wind one half of the hook winch cable on the drum. Wind the cable evenly across the drum.

4. Install the hook winch cable from the winch drum to the upper sheave and lower sheave assemblies. Position the hook winch cable over upper sheave (1), under lower sheave (4), over upper sheave (2), under lower sheave (5), over upper sheave (3) and under lower sheave (6).

NOTE: The hook winch cable should go over upper sheave (1) which is toward the front of the machine. Anchor the hook winch cable toward the rear of the machine.

5. Insert the hook winch cable into the pocket and around wedge (7). Tap wedge (7) and the cable into the pocket with a mallet.

6. Insert the end to the hook winch cable into clamp (8). Tighten the setscrew in the clamp to a torque of 45 ± 7 N·m (33 ± 5 lb ft).

7. Pull the hook winch cable until the line is tight. Lift the lower block above the ground.

8. Raise the boom.
