Service Magazine SEPD0434, Article 2, Page 2, September 14, 1998; "New Clutches Reduce Drag And Improve Efficiency".
The following effectivity should be added to the article listed above. The serial number is (5ZM298) for the 12H Motor Grader.
--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------
Description of Change: The new clutches (directional) increase the running clearance of the clutch packs. This increases the efficiency of the clutch by reducing the clutch drag which results in less horsepower losses in the transmission.
Adaptable To: The new 159-9228 Clutch is a direct replacement for the former 6Y-2301 Forward Transmission Clutch Group. The new 159-9229 Clutch is a direct replacement for the former 6Y-2302 Reverse and Second Transmission Clutch Group. The new clutches are part of 144-2232, 144-2233, 144-2234, 144-2235 Transmission Arrangements. The new clutches are effective with 120H (2AN134, 4MK528-531, 545, 5FM1400, 6TM396, 9YR364, 9FN539), 135H (3YK334, 8WN528), 12H (2GS379, 2WR723, 4ER546, 4XM1733-1740, 1742, 1743, 1836, 8MN613), 140H (2ZK3271-3274, 3276-3301,3459), 3AS473, 3FR195, 5HM1397, 8JM292, 9TN792, 9ZN261), 143H (1AL570), 160H (2HS383, 2FM490, 3GM89, 9EJ618, 9JM356) and 163H 5AK183 Motor Graders.
NOTE: All three directional clutches must be reworked, you cannot just rework one. The new directional clutch groups are adaptable to earlier transmissions ONLY if ALL directional clutch groups (#1, #2 and #3) are reworked with the new parts.
The new clutches are not serviced as a group. Refer to Illustrations and charts that follow. The new piston and valve are used in all three directional clutches (#1, #2 and #3). Only one of the seven 6I-8912 Friction Discs is replaced with the 159-0927 Friction Disc in clutches #2 and #3. The new Friction Disc is not used in clutch #1. The new 159-0927 Friction Disc has friction material only on one side and is installed at the end of the clutch pack (furthest from the piston) with the steel side (no friction material) against the steel face of the hub assembly. Transmissions built with these new parts will have different clutch pack running clearances. The new clearance are listed below. When measuring the running clearance, refer to the specifications module in the appropriate Service Manual for the machine being serviced.
