Reference: Service Manual Module, SENR6059-02, "Vital Information Management System (VIMS)"

This announcement is a comprehensive explanation of present production VIMS configuration software FOR TRUCKS and a description of how VIMS-PC (service tool) software operates with the listed configuration software.

The software restores trends, cummulatives, histograms and all resettable totals used with Truck Payload Monitoring.

Trucks with the VIMS attachment arrangement built with the new software are listed above. The 793B Trucks use VIMS as standard as of 1/1/96 build. The new VIMS software part numbers are shown in Chart 1.

Each truck needs the 130-1345 Source Software and one of the listed configuration software part numbers. During the key-on self test of VIMS, the source and configuration part number on-board a given truck will be displayed on the message center.

VIMS-PC 1.2 (latest version of off-board software)

VIMS-PC 1.2 is the latest version of off-board software and is used in the service tool (PC) to communicate with any VIMS machine and then manage the stored data downloaded from a VIMS machine. Version 1.2 was effective 10/15/1995. All VIMS users should be using only this version as this document is based only on VIMS-PC V1.2.

Significant Problems/Bugs Relating To The Use Of VIMS-PC V1.2 And The New Listed On-board Software.

1. Trends still need to be downloaded and reset BEFORE 500 hours elapse. Failure to do so will cause a 501 hour trend to write over the top of the 001 hour trend. Cummulatives and histograms are not affected in this way. We recommend that individual downloads NOT reset on-board data but left to total until near the 500 hour mark.

2. If the message center displays: "MAIN MODULE ERR", push the "F1" key on the key pad to identify which module the main module cannot communicate with. This message results when the main module cannot "talk" to another module. The MID code will identify which module this is.

3. Before connecting to the machine the first time AFTER installation of the new configuration, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT to load the Utilities program in VIMS-PC and remove any Configuration Part Number listed for the machine you wish to connect to. Failure to remove the old Configuration Part Number could cause later downloading of data to fail. VIMS-PC will read the new Configuration Part Number on the first connection and automatically add it to Utilities.

4. Other information not yet published: The parameters in Charts 2 will be correctly shown on the message center as listed below but will display in VIMS-PC as "UNKNOWN EVENT - (n)" where "n" is the numeral relating to the warning category shown to the operator (1, 2 or, 3). More information on this subject will follow as it becomes available.

VIMS-PC will show "UNKNOWN EVENT - (n)" for the parameters in Chart 2 WHEN using part no. 130-1345 Source AND, one of the new listed configuration software part numbers AND, VIMS-PC V1.2 in the service tool. A later release of VIMS-PC will address these "bugs".

The MID, CID and FMI codes shown in Chart 2 can help identify the cause, (parameter name) of the "Unknown Event". All Unknown Events (except two) originate in the electronic Engine Control. All Unknown Events are a Category 2 warning.

5. The resettable cummulative, PAY TOT (Service Manual Module, SENR6059-02, page 32, column 2, item 2), on ALL 789B Trucks is not correct. A fix will be announced later.

Parameter: VIMS-ENG SHUTDOWN (All Trucks - Relates to Ready Line Shutdown Feature)

The result of this event will cause the message center to display "VIMS-ENG SHUTDOWN". After an engine shutdown and BEFORE a download and reset of VIMS date, enter ELIST with the key pad. This will show a VIMS-ENG SHUTDOWN event following the event that caused the shutdown. When using VIMS-PC, this event will be displayed as "UNKNOWN EVENT - (n)".

If ECAP is connected to the engine control before the key start switch is turned off after a shutdown, "INJECTION DISABLED" should be displayed.

Download Prior To Loading Of New On-Board Software

Any time source or configuration software is uploaded into a VIMS main module that already contains stored data, or there is a need to change the on-board clock or SMH, ALWAYS download the stored data and reset the memories before continuing. Then, immediately reset the clock.

Miscellaneous Additional Information

1. VIMS on-board software can all be lost if system voltage is allowed to dwell in the range of 12-14 Volts for several minutes with the key switch ON. This condition can result from heavy electrical loads if the engine is not running or, it is running but the alternator is not charging.

Lead acid storage batteries are completely dead when system voltage approaches 23.0V. Never allow electrical loads like, parking lights, to discharge the batteries to this level during periods where the engine is not running as may happen during PM routines.

2. A new 127-9797 Cable Assembly used for data download, directly replaces the former 9X-3393 Cable Group. The new cable has the added feature to allow data download from the data connector outside the cab (ground level) without entering the cab to turn on the key start switch. The service key switch also must be turned on.

130-3501 Control Group (EPTC II)

Service Letter dated October 16, 1995 (PI3818) refers to the need for certain 784/785B VIMS trucks to update their transmission control to a newly released 130-3501 Control Group. This is a program to update trucks to measure torque converter output speed accurately. Only 784/785B VIMS trucks are to be updated. A revised version of this publication was mailed January, 1996, which adds serial numbers 6HK(477-493).

This Service Letter must be completed before the listed configurations can be used.

130-1643 Control Group (Cat Monitoring System)

Trucks shipped without rear axle oil cooling as monitored with the new 130-1643 Control Group (Cat Monitoring System) should already be reworked by this writing and includes the rear axle filter group on 793B Trucks. The harness codes need to be verified as early production trucks with Rear Axle Pressure Lube & Filter System may have been incorrect.

Again, this update must be complete before the listed configurations can be used.

PROCEDURE:

On VIMS Trucks:

In the rear of the cab, you will find secured to a plate:

1 - 100-5566 Bezel
4 - 7Y-7256 Screw

1. Remove the four screws and bezel from the plate.

2. A 40-pin Deutsch DRC connector can be found nearby which must be connected to this Cat Monitoring System Control; tighten the jack screw of this connector to secure connector to control.

3. Position Cat Monitoring System Control in plate; place bezel over face of control; secure bezel to plate using four screws.

4. Check that the proper "code harness" is connected to this same harness. To do so, scroll to mode 1 in this control. The following codes should appear based upon the truck setup. If the proper code does not appear, then the harness code plug is incorrectly configured and it will be necessary to rework the code plug to reflect only continuity between the contacts specified. Using improper coding will result in service hours being displayed incorrectly for Fan usage and/or false diagnostics.

On EMS Trucks:

The Cat Monitoring System Control mounts on the right portion of the dash in the cab. You will find at this position:

1 - 100-5566 Bezel
4 - 7Y-7256 Screw

1. Remove the four screws and bezel from the plate.

2. A 40-pin Deutsch DRC connector can be found nearby which must be connected to this Cat Monitoring System Control; tighten the jack screw of this connector to secure connector to the control.

3. Position Cat Monitoring System Control in dash; place bezel over face of the control; secure bezel to plate using four screws.

4. Check that the proper "code harness" is connected to this same harness. To do so, scroll to mode 1 in this control. The following code should appear based upon the truck setup. Chart 3 lists the 793B Trucks which are affected.

Implementation of VIMS requested engine shutdown using ONLY the configuration software part numbers Announced In This Document.

Currently, there are seven VIMS events that are related to engine oil pressure or level and engine coolant temperature or level.

* A Category 3 warning if engine oil level is low before start up; this event will be displayed and stored. The message center will display "eng oil lvl low fill before startup".
* A Category 2 warning if engine oil level is low following startup; this event will be displayed and stored. The message center will display "eng oil lvl low add oil immediately".
* A Category 3 warning if engine oil pressure is low following startup; this event will be displayed, stored and an event recorder will be activated. The message center will display "eng oil press low shut down safely".
* A Category 3 warning if engine coolant level is low before startup; this event will be displayed and stored. The message center will display "coolant lvl low fill before startup".
* A Category 2 warning if engine coolant level is low following startup; this event will be displayed and stored. The message center will display "coolant lvl low add coolant".
* A Category 2 warning if the engine coolant temperature is high; this event will be displayed and stored. The message center will display "coolant temp high reduce engine load". If temperature continues to climb, a Category 2 event will be displayed, stored and an event recorder will be activated; "coolant temp high reduce engine load" will be displayed on the message center.

To take advantage of these indicators in a "ready line" situation, we would also like to have VIMS request the Engine Control to shut down should an operator not be aboard the truck to either shut the truck down or follow any instructions which may be displayed resulting from any of the above events.

EFFECTIVE WITH THE NEW SOURCE AND CONFIGURATIONS:

A "ready line" protection is included in the listed new configuration part numbers. This is referred to as a "VIMS DEFINED SHUTDOWN" and was first discussed in the SPECIAL INSTRUCTION; SEHS9869; (5/95); "NEW PERSONALITY MODULES FOR 3500 EUI ENGINES USED IN OFF-HIGHWAY TRUCKS".

If an Engine Control Module ("ECM") is fitted with a personality module having capability to respond to a VIMS shutdown request and, if a configuration is loaded into VIMS which has the ability to request an engine shutdown, the personality module will allow the VIMS config to activate an engine shutdown when any ONE OR MORE of the following conditions exist:

* Engine Oil Level Low
* Engine Oil Pressure Low
* Engine Coolant Level Low
* Engine Coolant Temperature high

AND PROVIDING BOTH:

* The Parking Brake Is On - AND
* Ground Speed Is Zero.

The following four new trigger events (not displayed) match the four above conditions, or events, and will cause VIMS to ask the engine control to shut down the engine.

* A Category 2 warning if the engine oil level is low and engine is running. This trigger event would coincide with the above described event which displays on the message center "eng oil lvl low add oil immediately".
* A Category 3 warning if the engine oil pressure is low and the engine is running. This trigger event would coincide with the above described event which displays on the message center "eng oil press low shut down immediately".
* A Category 2 warning if the engine coolant level is low and the engine is running. This trigger event would coincide with the above described event which displays on the message center "coolant lvl low add coolant".
* A Category 2 warning if the engine coolant temperature is high and the engine is running. This trigger event would coincide with the above described event which displays on the message center "coolant temp high reduce engine load".

HERE IS HOW THESE TRIGGER EVENTS WORK:

If one or more shutdown trigger events are present at the time of ENGINE CRANKING, VIMS will allow the operator to start the engine. At the end of 20 seconds FOLLOWING a startup, if one or more trigger events are still active (present) AND, engine speed is at idle (or elevated idle) AND, the parking brake is still set (on) AND, the machine ground speed is zero, VIMS will request the engine control to remove fuel from the engine and it will shut down.

This means that during the 20 seconds following startup, if the operator speeds the engine above idle or, releases the parking brake or, moves the machine, VIMS will not ask for an engine shutdown because VIMS believes the operator is in control.

If one or more shutdown trigger events occur DURING machine operation (following the 20 second startup delay), meaning, the parking brake is released OR, the machine is moving OR, the engine speed is above idle, VIMS will not request an engine shutdown. VIMS will simply cause an operator warning relating to the event.

If one or more shutdown trigger events occur FOLLOWING a period of machine operation (following the 20 second startup delay) as found on a ready line (no operator), meaning, the parking brake is now set (on) AND, the machine is not moving AND, the engine speed is at idle (or elevated low idle), VIMS will request an engine shutdown.

None of these trigger events will be stored or displayed. If a shutdown does take place, VIMS-PC will show (Event List) the event that actually caused the shutdown, followed by an unknown event that is the VIMS request to shutdown.
